And for my next trick...
I shall be reading a somewhat wide variety of books. Probably not all this week (even I would be hard pressed to manage that!):
1) Starborne - Robert Silverberg 2) Beyond the Pale - Mark Anthony 3) The Eagle has Landed - Jack Higgins 4) The entire Rose of the Prophet Trilogy - Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (which I have read before, but a while ago) 5) Brightness Reef - David Brin (which I am rather looking forward to) 6) Vurt - Jeff Noon (on request) I am curious to see what Vurt is like, having skimmed the back, it looks like it could be either brilliant, or migraine inducing, or perhaps even both. I still also have to finish reading Soldier of the Mist by Gene Wolfe (I keep getting sidetracked, and Soldier is not exactly easy reading). Any more requests? Suggestions? Recomendations for books to read (or books to avoid!)? Fallguy |

Ooh ooh!
![]() My current fave is The Emerging Mind, by Karen Shanor. It's a series of articles on new research into the meaning of consciousness, based on the Smithsonian Institution Lecture Series. Contributors include Deepak Chopra, Frank Putnam and Jayne Gackenbach. Larry King is quoted as saying," (this) is one of the most fascinating and helpful books I've ever read"! And he's read a few, I'll bet..!

Fallguy, I would like to see you give a review on a thousand books
but i'll pick three for now. Dragons Egg by Robert L Forward, because it was the first sci-fi book I read and would like to see what others think of it. A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernon Vinge (maybe i shouldn't pick hugo award winners) The Legacy of Heorot by Niven, Pournelle, Barnes

Heh,
well I'm not sure A Fire Upon the Deep is still in print, but I'll see what I can do. Dragons Egg I can't say I've heard of, although I do recognise the name Robert L. Forward. The Legacy of Heorot is easy, I just have to find my copy in amongst the huge pile of books I own, lol! Actually, I saw a 2nd hand copy today, and thought about buying it (thats how lazy I am... ).I must say, if the first 2 are as good as The Legacy of Heorot, they must be cracking books.... ![]() The Emerging Mind - what catagory would I find this in gypseyman? I'm guessing it ain't science fiction, lol! ![]() Fallguy |

Quote:
Science FACT, maybe, although there are those who would argue that it could be more like science FANTASY ( some of these SETI bods can be incredibly literal, despite the ethereal nature of the whole project...) :laugh:If it's Science Fiction you're after, I'd recommend any of the classics. Stephen Donaldson's chronicles of Thomas Covenant have always been a favourite of mine.

Ahh, yes Gypseyman! The First Chronicles of Thomas Covenant was amazing reading. Not easy, but well worth every page turn.

You will find Vurt to be a very quick read, I'm sure - but it's lyrical (song-like) so don't skim too fast; otherwise it would be like playing a 45rpm record @ 400 rmps!
