DIMES

Man! What does it take to keep the stats up longer than a few days.

Anyone know what this means from my message tab

DIMES had a major crash and has been having intermittent server problems for the last few weeks. At least for the most part the crunchers keep crunching and the stats always catch up. They're working on it. The whole site's been down for the last few hours.

Has anyone managed to get a response from anyone at DIMES? I know I have sent a few emails and others have too without a reply. Forums don't seem to have any updates either. A few years back when this happened, they came back up after a few months with a big whoops we should have said something. We are alive...

Hopefully we'll get an answer.

Well that sucks. I've been away for a couple years and just found out that Dimes has been removed. Their website still seems to be up though. What is the alternative to Dimes these days?

Their website is up but it has many problems. They haven't exported stats in a very long time. There was a small blip there for a bit, but then it abruptly stopped again. The staff also quit replying to emails. You can't even get them to create an account for their forums any more. I had attempted many times. So as far as alternative goes?... there isn't one. We have not added any new NCI only projects (as there aren't many to begin with). Also, the feeling I got from the community was that NCI projects really don't feel like challenge worthy projects as they typically don't employ faster systems, more cores, over clocking, etc.. etc..

I personally don't think that matters as there are a lot of factors that can be challenging. IO intensity, bandwidth requirements, CPU intensity, GPU intensity, other hardware like ASICs, etc... can all be various things to make challenges greatly different. Something we had never added were projects like Quake Catcher Network and Radioactive@home. Both require special hardware and isn't typical for what people expect of challenges. Those aren't disqualifying issues, but many don't like it.

I contacted the former project lead about the status of this project and whether it would ever return. This is the reply I got:

Quote:
Hi,

Getting funding to keep DIMES going become harder and harder until I finally gave up on it and shut the project down.
I just got permission to move the old data to a repository so it can continue to be of use to the research community.

While DIMES is dead its spirit didn't. I took the idea of DIMES and set up a company http://www.bgprotect.com to protect (mainly governments agencies and financial organizations) from IP routing attacks. We rewrote the agent to be much more robust, and added advanced real time analysis to identify malicious routing anomalies.

Thank you for your long time support,

Best regards,
Yuval
