Wieferich@home
I would like to propose that Wieferich@home be removed from the vault, because of two reasons.
1. The project is inactive There are multiple interpretations to the rule "a project must be active". Wieferich@home still sends out work to clients so technically the project is still active. How ever the project seems to be abandoned by the admins in 2010, since then there have been: * No news posts on, or changes to the site * No forum posts by project admins * No client updates So organization wise it is inactive. I have tried contacting the project authors by email inquiring about the project status. But have yet to receive a response. And although there is no rule that a project has do unique work, I will still name it. (also mentioned on the general topic http://www.team-ninja.com/vbulletin/...ad.php?t=50641) 2. Wieferich@home & Primegrid overlap Wieferich@home has two types of workunits, the standard number crunching method all looking-for-prime projects employ (complete test). And a second method checking certain binary representations (periodic test). Primegrid has started the hunt for Wieferich primes, they tried contacting Wieferich@home to coordinate the search ranges but got no response. By now primegrid have already completed the entire range Wieferich@home is working on. So from my perspective the 'complete test' workunit is redundant work. So that leaves the 'periodic test' workunit, however there is no option in the client to make it run only periodic tests. And since development of the client has stopped in 2010 I am not expecting a change in this soon. Would like to know how you guys see this. -Qazwaplol Last edited by Qazwaplol; 18th January 2012 at 10:22 PM. |

What angers me the most is that the current main programmer of the PrimeGrid's application has offered Wieferich@Home help with their client in the past and they rejected it. Found some post on Mersenneforum from 2009 that indicates that. Since I am active with DC since end 2009, I feel kinda stupid to have spend time on this project. It is not just a game of credits, I like to put my modest resources on some useful projects. And they just don't bear any love for this math problem or for their own project since they are non communicative and obstructive.

So basically this project has a cross over with another? Is this a problem?

the overlap with primegrid itself is not my main concern, there are more projects that have overlaps. My main problem with Wieferich@home is that from what I can tell the project has been abandoned over a year ago.
Will admins ever return? What happens with the results of the project? Is there any point to crunching workunits for a project that's set adrift? |

Time for it to go I reckon.

From the evidence stated (I haven't run the project), I would agree that it seems the project no longer warrants inclusion. The work overlap does not bother me, but the likely uselessness of such work is telling.

Something else, W@H has a ludicrous credit system that grants a variable amount of credit each week for more or less the same amount of work. It seems this is based on the amount of active members, so a member who brings 100 PC's weighs as much as one with just 1 PC (like me). With the steadily declining interest in this project, this makes it almost impossible for new and also existing teams to have an efficient hunt there. Just another 2 pence/cents to get rid of it IMO, although this doesn't violate the rules of inclusion.
Since it has been 2 weeks since the last comment perhaps a poll can be added? |

My $0.02:
The range Wieferich@Home is currently testing, has by now been fully checked by primegrid (in a fraction of the time) There is NO reaction from Wieferich admin, first on the request from primegrid to coordinate ranges, next on the forum in the topic "project plans". This, plus the fact that the forum is spam-ridden, makes me think the admin couldn't care less. I don't think it should stay in DC-Vault. Do we want to keep people pushing resources to this project, just for the vault points and standings, given the above observations? Given the posters in this topic, this might look like a DPC rampage against this project, so I would like to see other team's opinions. A poll would be good. Regards!

I'll simply say that I agree with all the concerns about this project and have no objection to a vote on it's removal.
