...If you haven't seen it, it's new to you!
Dragon Ball Z restarted today from the beginning on cartoon network, and got a new intro and a new promo!
Cartoon Network Announces Schedule
The Cartoon Network has unveiled its schedule for the month of June. Among the notable changes are the debut of the Hamutaro anime series, which will be on twice daily -- at 7:00 am, and again at 4:00 pm, and the return of the Sailor Moon series, which will precede Hamutaro at 3:30 pm. In other changes Batman Beyond moves from 6:30 pm to 5:00 pm, while Dragon Ball moves from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm and DBZ goes from 6pm to Batman Beyond's former spot at 6:30.
The return of Sailor Moon to the nationwide Cartoon Network venue is the event of most immediate interest to pop culture retailers. Recently the series has been syndicated in some markets, but overall its visibility has diminished (see "Sailor Moon Visibility Down"). Its return is important because the Sailor Moon trade paperbacks from Tokyopop are tremendous sellers in both comic shops and in mass market bookstores (see "Sailor Moon GNs Top Bookstore Sales" ). Through a quirk of reporting Sailor Moon graphic novels are reported as children's books rather than graphic novels in the book market, a practice that obscures the fact that the series is the best-selling collection of graphic novels in the market.
Hamutaro (aka Hamtaro, see "Cartoon Network Adds Anime") is a youth-oriented series about a happy hamster, his five year-old owner, and his hamster friends. Although there is not much in the way of Hamutaro merchandise available in the U.S. yet, more than $2.5 billion worth of Hamutaro licensed goods were sold in Asia last year.
ADV Announces Five New Anime
Recent Short Run TV Series
ADV Films recently announced the acquisition of five new anime titles, all recent series, which are planned for release in the coming months. This reflects the accelerating trend toward shorter lead times between Japanese and US release.
Najica features a future world with rising sea levels, in which a perfumier moonlights as a secret agent. Sounds like lots of fan service in this new effort from the people who did Agent Aika; story may not be this anime's strong point.
Noir features two young women, one an assassin and one an ingenue with a flair for violence, who seek their common past. Anime Encyclopedia calls it a "near-future replay of Gunsmith Cats."
Mazinkaizer features the return of Mazinger, a giant fighting mecha, who joins with Mazinkaizer to battle bad guys.
Angelic Layer is the anime version of the latest manga creation from Clamp (Cardcaptors, Magic Knight Rayearth, X/1999), which was originally serialized in Shonen Ace. In Angelic Layer, young people use telepathy to battle customizable dolls, a game-like concept with no game to date.
Full Metal Panic features a young soldier sent to bodyguard a young girl with access to a mysterious technology.
