Idiots guide to Distributed Folding
Idiot Guide to Setting up TEXT CLIENT PROTEIN BUILDER
For use on systems running Win 95/98/98SE/ME/NT and Win 2000
this proceedure uses Text client of 16th May 2002
If you wish to get involved in this DC Project this guide will assist you in preparing obtaining
and setting up and running the above client - IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED and RECOMMENDED that you READ THIS GUIDE PRIOR TO PROCEEDING - you will require to carry out the following
A)WinZip loaded on your computer - if you don’t have this utility software then you can
download a trial copy from <http://www.winzip.com> download and set up on your
computer
B) Create a folder on your C Drive within the route directory called Dfold
C) Now you require to register to be able to join the project and TEAM 3d Headquarters
to do this go to site <http://www.distributedfolding.org> You will note several options
select HIGH-FLYER and click with left mouse button - this will launch the High-Flying
Login-Statistic Progress page - on the left hand side you will see New User ? and a
grey button marked Signup click on the button and this will launch the Distributed
Folding Project Registration form - complete as necessary
6th box down you are asked to fill in organisation in here I suggest you type in the
team name 3d Headquarters - once you have completed the form move down to
the button left of the page and you will see a grey button which reads Register and
along side the words and Your Handle will appear
When your handle appears - write it down exactly as it appears - it will be an 8
character long string of alpha, numerical or alphanumerical characters - an
confirmation email will also be sent to you at the email addy you advised earlier on in
the registration
Once step c is complete you are registered and now ready to set up and run the client
and participate in the distributed folding project
D) You will of course require a copy of the distributed folding client and this can be
obtained from here <http://www.distributedfolding.org> - click on Download scroll down
the page and you require to download the Text Client Protein Builder client(second
one on the list) for MS Windows Operating System - download this client on to your
Hard Drive and save it in the folder called Dfold it would also be a good idea to
print of a copy of the Text Client Readme documentation, as there are a lot of useful
tips e.g. setting up work caching that will save you time later
Once you have completed A B C and D above you are now ready to commence setting up
and running the DF Project
1) You should now have a zip copy of the TEXT Client that you downloaded in the
directory called Dfold with nothing else
2) On your task bar go to start - run and browse find the Dfold folder - now left click on
the folder it will open up don’t be alarmed it’s a zip file this is probably why you
cannot see it
3) Now go to file types at the bottom bar in the browse box and select all files - when
you make this selection the client file called distribfold-current-win9x.zip should be
visible
4) Highlight the 1st file and click on open
5) this will launch WinZip then proceed to unzip the client file - but make sure that you
unzip it into the Dfold folder - it will unzip within the Dfold folder inside a folder called
distribfold
Once you have unzipped the Client file into the Dfold/distribfold folder - you have now successfully unzipped and installed the client to your system
6) Using windows explorer go to the Dfold/distribfold folder - within you will see 17 files
7) Look for a file called foldit.bat (its a MS-DOS batch file)
8) Right click on the file name and go to edit
9) The file will read as below
@echo off
.\foldtrajlite -f protein -n native
place your mouse pointer at the end of the e in native and click with the left mouse
button hit the space bar once only then type in -df
the file should now read as follows
@echo off
.\foldtrajlite -f protein -n native -df
10) now go up to top left hand side of window click on file then click on save next click on
file and finally click on exit
11) now place mouse pointer again on the same foldit.bat file this time right click and go
down to create shortcut and then left click - this will create a shortcut button
12)Be sure to Place mouse pointer on the shortcut button description right click then go to rename
and left click - rename the shortcut as DC FOLDIT then place the mouse pointer on the
shortcut icon and left click - cut and paste to your desktop
13) Now the only other thing remaining to be done is the creation of a autoupdate.cfg file to hopefully ensure when a new protein is introduced your client will automatically update
Click on the start button go to Programs - Accessories - Notepad open up a new file and place the numeric 1 (one)only in there click on file then save as - save the file to name autoupdate.cfg and save it inside the distribfold folder within the Dfold folder - close the notepad window
You have now completed the installation of the client and are now ready to run the same
14) make sure that you are connected to the internet
15) double click on the DC FOLDIT icon and a DOS window will be launched after a few
seconds - it will advise it is checking for latest version - then a few lines of text will be
displayed - and it will ask you to enter your handle type in your handle exactly as it
was displayed on the registration screen and shown on the confirmation email you
received from Distributionfolding.org
16) after a few seconds the client will start up and the first line will read
Beginning structure # 1(4999 until next upload)
(this number can change depending on how many constructions DF decide to make the construction in size - to date there have been 1000, 5000 and 10,000 construction proteins)
this will be shortly followed by a few lines of text and a character construction
sequence will start to build and finish on the screen - you will also see the instruction
for dumping the client if you wish to do this manually
Hit 'Q' to exit the program (after finishing the current structure)
17). All that remains now is to minimise the dos window to your task bar and leave to run
Congratulations, you have now successfully loaded and are running the Folding client
