And I don't mean the "soft jazz" stuff of today... Blech!! :xpuke:
I mean stuff like song #2 off of Gerry Mulligan's "Night Lites." ;)
Anyways, one of my favorite professor's has a radio show here that features jazz/blues from the 50's thru the 80's. It's on every other Saturday. I really like the music he plays, but rarely catch it because usually I'm up to no good that time of the week. ;) So, was just wondering if anyone had suggestions to good, "peppy" jazz or blues.
No "smooth/soft jazz" please! After all, "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." ;)

me and jozzer play a lot of jazz... post-coltrane modal is our thing in the group, though I branch out into contemporary european styles, and joz has just escaped a lifetime of playing italian folk dance music in Piacenza. he he.

If you like the Blues you have to like Buddy Guy. Any way check out this site for many of the Blues people you know and love. And dont forget to look up Buddy :)

i had a girlfriend who loved heavy 19th and 20th century literature but couldn't get jazz.
I tried to explain to her that to me, the music she listened to was like a badly drawn cartoon strip, and jazz at its best is a novel by a nobel prize winning author. She didn't buy that of course - but there's a grain of truth. The heavy novel is incredibly rewarding but only if you commit time and energy into figuring it out. same is true of jazz. It took me 3 years of listening to swing, boogie and big band before i could handle bebop, and another 2 years to dig coltrane. and i'm only just getting into free stuff now. so don't be surprised if it takes ages before you like it. But believe me: it's so worth it...

Jazz is not something you really understand, its something you enjoy if you like it. If there is a jazz song that comes on that you like,, YOU Just like it thats it. No need to understand. The great thing about jazz is that its so evolved. anybody is bound to run across a song they like. "JAZZ is like an ocean, its got many fish in it." We have different tastes and we are sure of finding the "fish" we like best.

To enjoy *any* good music, I would argue, you must listen with patience...
I find that on almost every single CD I own, the songs on side B of most albums are the best, or at least equal to the best ones.
Portishead, Dummy: "Glory Box"
Cranberries, No Need to Argue: "Yeat's Grave" and "Daffodil Lament"
Tori Amos, To Venus and Back: "1000 Oceans"
Pearl Jam, Yield: "In Hiding"
Smashing Pumpkins, Siamese Dream: "Mayonnaise"
Alanis Morisette, Jagged Little Pill: "Wake Up" and "Not the Doctor"
Alanis Morisette, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie: "Joining You"
etc. etc. etc. I could go on forever. Usually, if I like the single the band has out, I will probably like the rest of their CD... So, I buy it *because* of their single, but not *for* their single. ;)

I am totally in awe of Johnny Mae Matthews "I Have No Choice" "Itty Bitty Heart" and Terry Callier "Ordinary Joe" "Look At Me Now"...
Excellent Blues and Jazz artistes!
Can I post a sample track here?
