I recently installed a copy of windows xp over a 98 install using upgrade/migrate option for my sister. The computer has been fine for six months but today when she boots up she gets these errors: himem.sys, Dblbuff.sys and IFSHLP.sys are all missing or corrupt use command interputer? How can I extract these missing files from disk when I cant even get into windows even with safemode? Can they be extracted to a floppy?

In the Win9x days, you would use the "extract" program and find the files in the cabs somewhere... I think they're on the Win98 CD somewhere. Not sure if XP has or needs them. Was the XP install "on top" of 98?

I researched each error online and found good info about the error but know way to extract the missing files. My best guess is maybe use bootdisk to load the generic cdrom drivers in dos and then try to find these files on all the disks I have other than that it looks like a reformat deal but just once I would like to figure out these software errors without having to reformat.

So you're saying that your XP install is now thinking it is a corrupt 98 install?
Have you tried re-installing XP on top again?

I can try that but Ive only been successful insatlling xp through dos twice! All other times 98 and xp upgrade is faster
