Sharp announced today a new optical IC chipset (codename: GA100T8R6MZ) that is capable of 60x CD-R, 60x CD-ROM and 16x DVD-ROM (reading) speeds. It will come out end of June at the price of 220 Yen. SHARP believes that such recorders could come end by the end of this year...
The writing time ,compared to existing 40x recorders, can be shorten to two thirds as SHARP said. Last SHARP's chipset can change the laser power during writing

Thats just madness - who needs a 60x CD-rom anyway? under what circumstance do you need to shift data on or off a CD at 60x

I've happliy used 24x for the past 3 years and that all i need (shock-horror it takes a WHOLE 10 miuntes to transfer the contents of the CD to my hard drive  )

shame one you shep!...u are an overclocker....speed should be everything to you!!:p :p

Its just gonna be the way things are:

make somin-->make it faster-->make it even faster-->make it so fast u can get any faster-->create somin new that is inherently faster-->start process again

nope, still can't think of any situation where i'd need to copy a CD in 2 minutes.

Instead of making a 20 year old technology sillily fast, why not create the next storage medium after DVDs or somat.

I thought it meant it could record disk's at 60x

Hmm... writing a CD in under two minutes. Nice :)

Now if only they can increase the capacity...
