re:dual booting win98 and win2k error verifying dmi pool data.

Hi all I hope someone can help,

I'm having a problem dual booting on my computer.I have a PIII 550 with a Maxtor 40 gig H/d.
I partion it 3 gig fat32 C: (for win98)
4 gig fat32 D: (for win2000)

I installed win98 on the C: and it works fine. Then I start to install win2k with the following steps
Welcome 2000 setup wizard screen - I choose clean install (multi operating sys)
Select secial options - advanced options (I choose my own partion ) D:

Then files begin to copy and the computer preforms its first reboot .This is when the computer hangs at "verifying dmi pool data" and doesn't go any further.

I've tryed installing from dos with the same error and also i've upgraded my bios plus tryed changing various bios settings and still have the same error.I hope someone out their can help me!!

Thanks phil

Hi philphil.

Welcome to the board :xwavey:
This issue can be caused by any of the following:

1-Corrupt boot files on the computer.
2-Settings for hard disk drive are not correct.
3-Boot devices not set properly.
4-BIOS corrupt or misc. setting not set properly.
5-Connections loose or disconnected.
6-Bad Hard disk drive or other bad hardware

Well..., i'm assuming that the bios settings seems ok as you said to Lee on "Microsoft....Forums" and that it was working fine with Win98 OS too.It seems a corrupt boot files on your HD.Erase the master boot record(MBR).One advise, this operation erase all of your datas. If you don't know how(you can try Fdisk/MBR, but sometimes it doesn't works) tell me and i will tell you how to do that with a little lines using assembler language. After that take Powermax v3.03 on Product Support>Software and Utilities and perform a diagnostic read/write verifications on your Maxtor hard drives to determine hard drive integrity.

hi sptw,

thanks for your help i tryed what you suggested
1. fdisk /mbr
2. then ran powermax.exe with the following results

installation test - ok
90 sec test - ok (r/w buffer tested passed)

hi guys
I bit more info on the history of my problem. I orginally purchased a quantum 40 gig h/drive which i had the same problem with dual booting. I run the program powermax and had a read write error and I got the drive replaced with my current maxtor 40gig .I also tryed dual booting on a 3.5g h/drive with on luck but on my ****ty pentium I it dual booted ok on the 3.5gig.

I hope this can help
thanks phil
