This IBM Deskstar hasn't failed me yet. But I worry, because man is it loud!! I mean, I had my CD player running on my computer, and went back into the living room (comp is in office) and while watching TV in the other room, could hear the "barn door swinging open" effect from all the way in there...

Yet it's still storing my data... Hmm... I think I'll buy a quieter drive next time. When your HD is louder than your 2 80mm's, your Y's tech 4800RPM, and your 120cm, and you can hear it in the next room with the CD player and the TV going, well... That is just too blarphing loud!

Which series are they? I found the 75 GXP to be quite quiet, and the 60 GXP near silent. Compared to a FOP-32 anyway.

If you don't mind sacraficing some performance, you can go to IBMs page and get the feature disk, which lets you change the acoustic management of the drive. This trades off performance so you get less noise.

Hehe... Well, it's quiet enough when it's simply idling.. but when it tries to access data, look out, and grab your protective gear! :D btw - I have also recently run defrag. While defragging, the disk was not loud at all... Hmm... odd...

You can download the IBM drive utility from...well IBM. It allows you to lower the noise on your hard drive. But you sacrifice a little performance.

Hmm... You guys have me right up to the point where you mention something about my performance going south.... Then, mysteriously, you lose me... :D
