View Full Version : Got my 850 T-bird Slot-A to replace my Classic 550. Do I just swap the CPU on my K7M?

Are there any BIOS settings to worry about? Voltage etc? Can't remember if I'm running jumper-free mode or not, so I'll check that out.

You may need to select 'load optimal settings' in the bios. It may be worth updating your bios to the latest one if you haven't already.

My BIOS is the latest I could find. I updated it very recently. Says specifically in BIOS's previous that it adds 850+ mhz support and I believe it mentions T-bird support too.

OK, I may try the load optimal settings thing. Thanks :)

Well, despite my best efforts to communicate with the seller, I ended up getting and paying for 2 fans instead of one with my T-bird order. I now have an 850 and a 900 and two fans. I wanted to use the 850 for my father at say 106 FSB for just over 900 mhz and use a plain dual-fan. I wanted to get a VOS32 for my 900, but now I have 2 fans. Granted, they were cheap, and at least they have two fans. So anyways......my question now is, should I use the heatsink compound that came with the cheapy dual-fan or should I get "better" "name brand" thermal grease?

I just want to try out the 850 on my motherboard with one of these plain old dual-fan CPU coolers! The 850 will go on a K7M I have ordered. Eventually, I will use the 900 in my own system with a VOS32 :)

If you are removing it soon, go ahead and use a cheepie silicone greese. If you are using it on a permanent install, then I would advise that you use an ester-based heatgoo. The silicone ones will run over time, and you will notice(too late on an oc'ed box) that the temps have gotten out of hand, take it apart, back together, all is fine again?!? HUH. Repeat every 4-6 months. The ester stuff will not creep, which is why many(myself included) who do industrial installs of electronics do not use the silicone. Ester stuff is cheeper than AS (which is silicone, and why people complain about it after they use it for half a year)

Thanks. Thats good advice. Any brands I can looks for which are ester based?

thanx :)

This stuff (http://www.atexelectronics.com/GC.htm#44) is what I have been using for the last 2 years. The 8 bucks (5 english funny munny :p ) worth will last you for ever.

Ah well, I went to a local store and bought a 3 gram thingy of ArcticSilver 3 for about $12.00 CAD. Probably too much money, but I highly doubt I'll ever use it all up if I'm careful with it. Probably use it on the dual-fan CPU cooler that will go on my fathers 850 too, even though I could use the cheap stuff. We'll see :)

Well, I used the Arctic Silver 3 because I suspect that I will use this setup permanently for my pop. I will do some benchmarks to see how it compares with my 550-600.

I had to remove the CPU Heat-support clip because the two nibs were in the way of the fan and wouldn't really work with the heat sink anyways. I notice a tiny tiny bit of fan/chassis vibration noise now. The heat sink is a tad smaller but has two fans vs one. The one thing I like is the fans are quiet but I felt a fair bit of flowage from them.

Should I worry about the heat-sink support clip thingy-do-ma-bobber?

do you guys know what the difference is between what AMD calls a athlon 900Mhz w/Tbird cache and a athlon thunderbird 900Mhz?

i have the 900w/tbird cache and i am looking at a Asus K7v-RM vs. K7V. Lolboy said that board dosent support the tbird. tbird cache=thunderbird?

The Classic AMD and t-birds differ for many reasons but apart from the different process, (some older Classics are .25 and the newer Classics and T-birds are .18) the difference is, the Classic Athlon had a 512 kb cache on the "card" operating at half the speed of the CPU. The T-bird has a 256 kb cache on the chip operating at the same speed of the CPU. Asus K7V's don't normally work well with the T-bird SlotA's. The K7V RM is the same as a K7V. There are some K7V-t's out there and they work with the T-bird slotA's. I have a T-bird Slot-A 850 mhz and I'm using an Asus K7M at 106 mhz FSB for 901 mhz CPU and its fine.

:) thanks for the quick heads up. i want to find a MoBo that can rock both my classic600 and my Tbird900. i'll try to find a Asus K7v-T for my overclock project. any other suggestions on a slot A MoBo with lots of FSB settings?

thanks again.

I think the K7M is pretty decent at FSB settings up to a limit of about 119 mhz, but with good cooling, that should be ok.

We tried to overclock my friends Classic 700 via the FSB on his K7V and couldn't even manage a FSB of 102 mhz. No idea why.

K7V-t might be the most bang for the buck because it runs T-birds and runs PC-133 at 133 mhz. Not sure about the FSB though. Remember, if you run PC-133 at 133 mhz memory bus and overclock the FSB, then that 133 memory bus goes up too!! Need good ram for that. not generic.

I'd say look for a K7V-t and try that, and or find a K7M.

I just picked up a K7M w/o audio in my area here in Canada for $80 CAD shipped. Should be fine for my 900 mhz T-bird.

LOLBOY was selling K7V-t's and K7M's. check his posts....
