View Full Version : Which Hard drive?

I'm not sure which Hard drive to get, either the:

MAXTOR EIDE HARD DRIVE MODEL # 6L040L2 40GB 7200RPM

or the

Seagate Barracuda IV ST340016A 40gb 7200rpm EIDE

I know the maxtor is ATA 133, but I hear thats a marketing scam, and ATA133 is only helpful in extremely large drives.

Other then that, the Seagate is a few $ cheaper, and they both use the same fluid dynamic Bearing Motors (if I'm not mistaken)

So, which one do you guys recommend?

I've had the 60GB version of the Seagate for a week now and would recommend it without doubt so far. Fast, very quiet and no problems at all :)

the seagate so far is my first choice... anyone else feel the maxtor is better?

My choice is maxtor. This Seagate Barracuda IV ST340016A 40gb 7200rpm EIDE is good, but i would go for Maxtor D740x.

there anything you can back hat up with? (I don't disagree, I just want a specific thing someone can point out why 1 is better then the other)

Hi blitz.

Sorry, you're right, an opinion without a reason is not an opinion. Here is why i choose Maxtor:

- There's a serious issues with seagate barracuda IV for multi-drivers configurations, to be more specific, on Raid0 configuration.Take a look here and here is what Paul's Faq says:
"To paraphrase Seagate technical support, the Seagate is so fast that the RAID controller can't buffer the data quickly enough and so the disk has to read everything twice and hence runs much slower. So there you have it: the disk is so fast it is actually much slower. Seagate do not have a firmware fix at the present time as they claim they are waiting "for the rest of the industry to catch up".The problem has been reported on several different motherboard chipsets and several different RAID controllers."

-For use as a single drive it's OK, but compared to Maxtor D740X, this last is better.Take a look here on this test using five 40GB hard disks

Hi PatchleAD.

Beautiful dog.I have four Irish Setter :)Well , i have two D740x Maxtor 40GB/ATA 133 on raid0 using Promise fast track100 card and they perform great, really excellent. With HDtach i got: 87mb/s read maximum, 3423 mb/s minimum and 52 mb/s average).About WD, actually, i think that the WD Caviar WD1200JB remains undisputed king of the hill when it comes to ATA performance. This is so new for me to talk about reliability and i don't know nothing about this WD on Raid0.I could not find a review about this WD on Raid0, i think there's no one till now, but as single drive it is really good, maybe the best.

I hope this help you.

Here it is PatchleAD:
This bench was made using HDTach and MSI K7N420pro with 140 mhz on FSB.StorageReview made an interesting test with IBM Deskstar 120GXP, Maxtor DiamondMax Plus D740x, Western Digital Caviar WD 1200BB and WD 1200JB, Sansung Spin Point P40 and Seagate Barracuda ATA IV.Take a look there on the first page on "IBM Deskstar 120GXP".The results above on my post(87mb/s read maximum, 3423 mb/s minimum and 52 mb/s average)was made using a KT7A-Raid with 147 mhz on FSB and some changes on register 52,OD, and 75, but as you can see, the difference is little.Actually, my 2 Maxtors D740x are sitting on a MSI K7N420Pro and unfortunately this mobo don't like high FSB.Cluster size and Block size are both two 16K.

I'm using a wd1000bb se and it actually is quiet and extremely fast, haven't tried any raid setup with it so I don't actually know how it fares there.
