View Full Version : Removing a FreeSpeed Pro?

A friend of mine had his PC modified some time ago using a FreeSpeed Pro on a K7-750MHz processor, running on a Gigabyte GA-7IX motherboard.
He has asked me to take a look at his PC because it keeps locking up for no apparent reason - and the first thing I wanted to do was to remove the GFD to see if this is the possible cause of his problem. If I simply remove the FreeSpeed from the processor, the PC will not boot (no video). If I replace the FreeSpeed, the PC boots normally.
Is there some sort of additional hardware mod to the motherbaord which would have been carried out in order to get the FreeSpeed working ? Unfortunately I cant ask the people who carried out the original mod as they are no longer in business!
Anyone have any thoughts please ?

check the voltages... and check the FSB in BIOS

Hi evaewa,
Welcome to the board :xwavey:
It would be unusual to change anything on the mobo to install a Freespeed card, with the exception of the voltages, which Ottoman already suggested...
Try seeing if there is an option in the bios (or a dipswith, or jumper on the mobo), to change the core voltage to 1.70 ;)
Hope this helps

Unfortunately the Gigabyte GA-7IX motherboard is jumperless and autosenses the core voltage. I can find nothing whatsoever to change -not even in the BIOS !! Yet the PC will not boot without the FreeSpeed fitted to the processor.
I have re-set the CMOS; removed the battery; loaded the failsafe BIOS values; opened the K7 case - no sign of soldering; and no sign of any mods to the motherboard. I am completely stumped!!
Any and all help or suggestions appreciated.

Ah another Reading overclocker :xwavey:
Very strange this one. Don't know what to suggest. Maybe try the processor in another mobo. If you can't find one drop it round to me and I'll try it. Will the pc boot if you set the freespeed to standard speed and voltage?

blimy they are coming out of the wood work... there must be at least 6 or 7 regulars from reading now
anyway welcome to the board :xwavey:

What voltage is he using in the Freespeed? Can he change the voltage in BIOS? If so, try upping a bit, reboot. Remove the Freespeed. Worked fine for me.

I have sent you an e-mail - please advise if you don't receive it.

I got your email but it hepls others who may have problems if you post in your threads.
Anyway, to set it to standard you need to know what speed the Ahty was in the first place. Haved a look at the serial number on the plastic casing if you stil have it and it will say something like 'K7750xxxxxx'. This would be a 750meg. Set the core voltage to 1.6v or 1.7v and give it a try.
If you dont know how to set ther dip switches on the Freespeed then check out the sticky thread right at the top of the slot A section posted by KMS. This has a little Flash proggy thast will show you.

Sorry - point taken !!
Athy is a K7-750 - forgive my ignorance, but how do I establish what is (should be) the core voltage ?

Sorry - should have read your message properly BEFORE replying! Have tried setting the FreeSpeed at 1.6v and it boots just fine! Remove the FreSpeed and - no video (no BIOS beeps either).

Strange - I replied to your PM from earlier. Did you not get it? Anyway, I'm in Tilehurst where you at? Are you wanting to try the processor in another mobo?

This is just a wild guess but chack the CPU board and see if the SMD resistors that adjust the voltage, multiplier and so on havn't been removed.
I heard somewhere that this is one way to adjust speed with a home-made GFD so it doesn't have to be powered.
Hope u figure it out.:)

Thanks for the info - Lolboy has the cpu at the moment - trying to test it on his system. Waiting for (good?) news from him at the moment.
