Hi guys!
Do you think that this is normal?: I have a friend who is running his athlon1000 at 62°C!! This is no full load temp, because he don`t have any burning proggie like CPUburn(the best one for heating up your cpu) or anything else...And he think that this is funny...Well I`m thinking how is this possible that this poor cpu is still running fine?

if it's a standerd home computer thats fine... as long as it's not clocked it will quite happily run like that for years

uhm.. anything above 60°C is bound to give probs
whenever any of my Tbird/Duron/XP PC's passes 60°C it becomes unstable
you should advise your friend to :
- buy a better heatsink (alpha pal8045 / papst fan)
- get some artic silver
- place a quiet sunon 80mm fan as exchaust fan

Agree with Dicki...my own personal machine at work idles around 57c and at full load hits 62-63c. This is with a FOP32 and an Athlon 1200. Its perfectly stable, and has been so for well over a year now. As long as its not overclocked, this is an acceptable temperature for the Athlon.
These days however, I use SK6 coolers with Quiet Sunon 60mm fans, and my Athlon machines run under 45c full load. This is a great, quiet solution for me. I will probably replace the Fop32 on my work machine with an SK6 cooler one of these days, but there isnt any need. I know of a couple other machines with older socket a heatsinks that also run in the 60s, with no ill affects.
However, if you notice any instability, a new cooler would be a good investment.

Hi PeTe,
I have to agree with JMke on the temp issue.
When the temp gets that high, there is no damage to the CPU, but the higher temps cause the chip to run irratic and unpredictable.
Yes, if you are not overclocking, there is no damage to the CPU. In fact, AMD says that you can run the chip at 72 degrees C for virtually forever, and cause no damage.
You cause no physical damage to the chip, but the function is not stable.
You asked if that temp is normal......My answer is "NO" it is not.
With any kind of heatsink and fan, the idle temps should not be that high.
Is your friend using a good hestsink, good thermal paste, and a good fan? His temps should not be that high.
Make sure he has thermal paste installed.
Let us know answers, and we will go from there.
Take care, buddy............

Those temps sound alittle high for a non-o/c system, but i would not worry about it:D

Actually the thermal max for modern athlons (like the 1ghz) are 90c. Not 72c.
AMD white papers list 60c well within operational tolerances for these models of chips.
Many OEM systems run hotter than 65c default. These are perfectly stable machines.

I did not state that 72 degrees was the limit of the AMD operational line. I mearly stated a fact that they will run over the stated 62 degrees!
I, and most people are aware of AMD White Papers on the CPU capibilities.
That is not the issue........The question he made was "is it normal".
If it is normal, there are a lot of system out there who run MUCH cooler, does that make them abnormal. I think not.
"Many OEM systems run hotter than 65c default", and many run cooler also.
Have a great day..........

The answer is.....If the system is stable......it is OK.It is even possible that that the probe is malfunctioning!Butt the system WILL show instability before any damage occurs (talking of a running system of course)

Just a thought but my 1800+ just quit on me and I was at 72 full load with my vantec and a 80mm fan with an adapter. I can't figure out what happened to my chip but I'm not ruling out the heat factor. Guess I have to put that F$#@'n loud arse delta back on there and go sleep on the couch.

Hi Farabomb,
Huh??
I can't hear ya over the fan's noise.
Just kidding.....sorry to hear about your chip bitting the big one.
