View Full Version : Pushing My TBird Further

I appear to have topped out with pushing my Tbird.

If I go to 9X on my GFD with 100MHz FSB (900Mhz) or 110Mhz on the FSB (8X = 880MHz)then all goes well with a SiSoft benchmark but once I get into 3DMark the system eventually freezes, due to heat I suppose.

Temp = 50DegC probed right on top of core. My Vcore is set at 1.8v
but pushing it to 1.9 did not help.

Any tips on going that littel bit further?, or should I settle for 864 from a 750 Tbird. I don't know what core I have since I only cut a slot open for adding the GFD.

My running setup is as follows :-

I reckon you should see more out of it but heat is your problem. I would invest in a VOS32 cooler as the FKK50 isn't up to the job. I tried adding an extra fan to one of these but I could only up my core voltage to 1.8 the same as you before it got too hot. With a vos you can run up to 2.05v and still be ok.
Get brave and follow my instructions on how to split down to the core and have a look.

Before buying the FKK50 I looked at the VOS32, but I read reports that it doesn't fit on the K7M due to the Power socket.
The FKK50 with dual 7000rpm fans is a noisy ******, but seemed a reasonable choice (A year ago), I havent looked since for better fans.
I should revisit this.

The temp is usually arround 45 until the going get tough and peaks arround 50°C when I push the PC hard.

With good cooling what sort of level should I expect to be able achieve?

The vos will fit a K7M mobo with a little modification. You need to cut off the bottom fins where they would foul the power connector. I know it fits cos I have one fitted at home at the moment.

Ah! Cheers Lolboy, I'll search out a VOS32,

About the VOS32+ with the exhaust duct, does this gain much more on cooling power ie worth the extra cost?

When I bought a VOS+ I got a plastic ducting which I used to direct air up the case from the front case fan which is at the bottom of the case. I also got with it a HUGE fan which I used to cut the grass in the back garden.

Progress Update

I have now passed the 900MHz barrier :-), by adding a extra case fan bolted on the side bringing down the temperature by 5°C. Details :-

TBird 750@901MHz with FSB=106, 8.5X and 1.9V

108MHz FSB runs but is a touch unstable when pushed with 3DMark

Still trying to find a VOS32, they are as rare as GFD's these days

Cheers

ps tried reversing the PSU fan to blow on SlotA, temperature went up

I couldn't help but notice you said the heat sensor is right ontop of the core... it should not be literlly like that, instead wedged up against the side of it. I'm sure it's just the way it came out... but still worth mentioning. The only thing ontop of the core should be the heatsink or heatplate.

Finally got hold of a VOS32+ and installed it asap.

Remarks

1) The VOS32 is certainly a big beast with bigger fan but runs quieter than my original FKK50 , slower fan speeds for 4200 againts 7000 t/m

2) Overall temps didn't change, I still crash when I hit 50°C at 901MHZ, 1.9v ( Idles at 42°C)

I think the VOS32 is very efficient but it pushes air out vertically and goes against my air vents which I assume were letting air in since I have two other fans sucking air out. Thus I suspect I have upset the airflow in the case.

The extra duct with the VOS32+ wont fit my case :(

I will need to rethink my fan setup to get the air flowing in/out (I have more fans than Celine Dion right now), since I quess the balance is not quite right (1 in, 2 out, VOS32 and one for the graphics card)

Musing over a 5 1\4 bay HD cooler (Triple fan) to suck more in and push it over to the Tbird plus a side mounted fan to suck the air that is being pushed thru the VOS.

Keep the faith
