Ahhhh, the wonders of 21st Century Plug and Play.......my arse.....
Right. So I bought a shiny new bigger 60GXP IBM drive to complement my older less shiny, slower 75GXP IBM drive. I've tried setting the older one (Cheesy) that has the OS, as the Master and Slave on IDE channels 1 and 2, and the new one (Peas) as both Master and Slave on IDE channels 1 and 2, but no matter what combination, Win 2k will not give Peas a drive letter! It always recognises Cheesy no matter where it is, as the C: drive. It even recognises Peas as an installed HD, (under Device Manager) but I can't access the dashed thing; it's not being given a drive letter.......
I've even tried setting the 2 drives on Highpoint 3 and 4, but didn't fancy erasing everything off of Cheesy to create a RAID array. Anyway, I can't get the thing to boot from channels 3 or 4, but that's a different kettle of fish.........
1) How can I get Peas to be given a drive letter on IDE 1 or 2?
2) Should I set Cheesy (with the OS) as the Master or Slave, if I choose to link the 2 drives on the same cable, even though it's a slower drive?
3) Alternatively, should I stick both drives on the Highpoint 3 and 4 channels, and use IDE 1 and 2 for my CD and Zip drive?
4) Is there a way of sticking these two drives on 3 or 4, so I can take advantage of UDMA 66/100?without creating a RAID array?
5) If I can, how do I get the system to boot without giving me the blue-screen message that it can't? Is this because it has to be set up as a RAID array? Or do I have a bad Highpoint controller? Or, is it because I have IBM drives? I've heard bad things about IBM drives being unable to work on channels 2 and 3......
Well, any help much appreciated...I soon won't have much of my fine mane of hair left at this rate.......

Have you partitioned the hard disk? It wont appear until you do. What OS are you using? You can run fdisk from a Win9x startup disk to do that. Never had to do it under 2k/XP, guessing there might be something under disk admin in the admin tools. Once partitioned, just format (Windows will do that for you) and that's it.

If I were you, personally I would leave Cheesy as primary master. Stick your CD/Zip on the secondary channel, and put Peas on the highpoint.

Ah. Cheers Mackerel. Perhaps it's not partitioned, because I thought my Win2k did that. I think there's something up with my Admin tools. The folder's completely empty....oh well....I'll find a way to manually partition it then......
