What OS is on your mum's PC? Generally, you'll need to enable file sharing, and share some drives/folders before it will become visible.

I'll have to leave it to someone else to fill you in then, I only have one machine on XP and I haven't played about with the networking side yet. I much prefer Win9x for networking. No excess baggage to get in the way, it just works and works fast.

Are the drives on your mums machine set up to be shared? To check, open up my computer, right click on the drives your wish to be able to see on the network and choose sharing and security from the drop down menu. You will then be presented with a property sheet with the option to share the drive with other PCs on the network. Just tick the appropriate box.
Once any drives you wish to be shared are so ticked then all other machines on the network should be able to access them and exchange files etc. You will need to do the same thing with any printers that you want to set up to be shared too.

HI There
I just had a big networking working discussion previous.
If you can access one pc you should in theory access the other .
I would take the advice given. That both machines should have file and print sharing enabled even go as far as internet sharing .Another way is to go to start and then run and type \\mums c\\ the name of your mums computer or vice versa ! this will find any network on your pc. If failing that take to heavy drinking.
ps.Go through home office networking. again have individual names for computers but have same workgroup like: mshome .
I hope this small info helps!!
