I'm soldering 3 pots onto a small pcb to volt mod an Abit KR7A:

My question is, after I ground/attach the leads to the IC's, what do I want to have the pots set to? I assume you want the pots set to zero resistance to start out at default voltages. The guides I've read say to set the pots to maximum resistance. Is this correct? This doesn't make sense to me.

47k-Ohm pot- pot rotated fully counterclockwise:

I'm assuming I want to have it fully counterclockwise to start out at default voltage then move slowly clockwise to increase vdimm/vcore. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm not familiar with the mod and how it works. How are the pots wired?

Do they go across (in parallel with) existing resistors which remain in place? If so, to start with you do want the pot set to the highest resistance possible. Reducing the pot set value then reduces the overall resistance, it is not possible to increase resistance in this configuration.

If the pots go in series with existing components then you would set it to zero and increase it. This will increase the resistance, it is not possible to decrease it in this configuration.

They are in paralell. One lead is ground, and the other is attached (soldered) to one of the legs of the target IC chip. In the case of VDimm, leg 3 of the HIP6521 IC chip on the motherboard.

Got a link to sites showing this mod? I think I've heard of similar for other boards.

Connected in parallel, you can only reduce the total resistance compared to before the mod. So starting with the pot at the highest value will have the least effect to start with.

Starting at zero would probably be a bad thing to do, as it would probably try seting the voltage way higher than you'll ever need. Best to go up carefully...
