I'm goin gto be buying a new computer soon, But I'm not sure what motherboard to get.

I'm looking for a DDR motherboard that can support an Athlon XP 1800.

So far, I am thinking of either:

ECS K7S5A
IWILL XP333

I dont really wanna spend too much.. what do you guys think?
oh and I'm probably not going to be overclockng.

Agree with SilverSaver, between ECS K7S5A and IWILL XP333, i'd buy Iwill XP333.
Regards.

oh, also, what RAM?

Corsair PC-2400?
OCZ 256 PC-3000 DDR?

Corsair PC-2400

good good stuff, does as well as my kingmax 2700.

i would never buy any OCZ stuff from all the bad press i hear about that company. i'd wait till the "special OCZ stuff" they sell or come out with is done by the major makers. i remember being almost drawn in by their super gear at first. but i am sure glad, no doubts at all, that i didn't buy from them.

Ok, well, a little off topic of what the thread was started as.. but lets see if I can complete my new comp now.

The real stuff I intend on using for a while:

IWILL XP333-R

256mb Corsair PC-2400

Water Cooling (probably, not sure what yet.. any recommendations?)

Case... well, I think that depends on the water cooling etc. (size power supply, etc.)

HD... not sure.. IBM 60GXP, maybe.

~$50 stuff to hold me over till later:

1 gig Duron (well, maybe. Not sure, either I'm getting that to hold me over untill later, or I'll get an XP (1600 or 1800), the way I figure, $50 now, should hold me over a few months, save me money, and allow me to have another comp later.. also, I might be able to get into overclocking with the cheap CPU now)

Geforce2 mx400 64mb (till I get a Radeon 8500, or possibly something else)

Later:

Turtle Beech Santa Cruz (I'll use the onboard sound for now, I almost never turn my speakers on)

Another 256mb Corsair PC-2400

Radeon 8500 (unless something else REALLY catches my eye)

So, what you think?... I'm thinking of getting the Duron right now, and just using that to start trying to overclock (since its only about $50)

What water cooling should I get?? (watercooling is the main reason why I'm going so cheap on the other stuff right now, hehe.. umm, silversaver, I was looking at your watercooling system your selling.. looks good.. but think I would be able to get it to work?).. and what case + PS?

HD.. umm, I'm no expert on HDs... obviously I want atleast 7200RPM.. and I need atleast 20 gig right now...

anyway, thanks for the help so far!

HD... not sure.. IBM 60GXP, maybe.
It is better to take a look here and here and here.
IBM GXP line is a kind of game lottery.Bet and pray.Obviously it continue to be one of the best HD on the market.Think about Maxtor D740x.This model have two series "j" and "L".The "L" series bulding with Fluid Dynamic Bearing Motors and is better than "J" series.Another choice is Western Digital Caviar (Special Edition) 7200 Hard Drives. Here is a review about this

Ok, how do you know if its L or j?

newegg.com has this.. is that L or j? (both letters are in model # heh)

MAXTOR EIDE HARD DRIVE MODEL # 6L040J2 40GB 7200RPM - OEM, DRIVE ONLY D740X Plus ATA133/100 2MB Cache Buffer <8ms Seek Time - 3 Year Manufacturer Warranty. 40.0gb 7200 rpm

ok, I read the reviews on newegg, said its not the one with the fluid dynamic bearing motors.... anyone know where I can get the L series at the best price (and preferably not NY (sales tax)... but I will pay a little more to buy from a better company such as newegg)

I'm sorry Blitz, i give you an information about "J" and "L" series, but it seems that "L" series is not so easy to find.As SilverSaver said the "J" and "L" series have the same performance, only "L" series running a little quiet than "J" series.

Ok, how do you know if its L or j?

MODEL # 6L040J2= it is a "J" series.

MODEL # 6L040L2= it is a "L" series.
The last number is a number of heads.

Epox 8kha+ only $105.00 the fastest best performing board and it is cheap!, IBM or Maxtor Drive and a Geforce 3 Ti200 or Ti500...

Hey Blitz, I would stay away from the Corsair, if you can get Crucial. Crucial just o/c better than the Corsair! I would def go for the Ati card over the mx400, I have a Geforce 2 mx400 and really do not like it, I liked my Radeon 32 much better!:D

As for my o/c results, I am not done yet i am just breaking her in:D

EPOX IS A BETTER BOARD THAN THE IWILL:D

blitz
4th January 2002, 06:18 PM
Well doesn't Crucial only go up to pc-2100...

oh, and the video card:

Radeon VE 64mb (SDR, RETAIL) or Radeon VE 7000 32mb (DDR, Retail)?

My best guess is to go with the 7000, but, I'm no video card expert.
