... The temperature of the power cables going to my mobo. They're distinctly 'warm'.

heh heh.... do some maths gitster

imagine an XP chip producing for instance 70 watts of heat if we assume all of that energy is coming from electricity with no losses (e.g. all the electricity is converted to heat) and that power is coming from the 5 volt line we see that

power = voltage * current

.: current = power / voltage

which equals 14 amps!!!

no wonder those wires are getting hot ;)

can u also calculate how much heat the cables produce? :D

I can just see it happening now... hardcore overclockers starting to replace the power cables with 100% OFC solid silver cables :D

Hi,

I don't think there is anything you should have worry about that... According to Newtons theory, excess energy is transfer to heat.... As long as the CPU isn't running over spec, it should be fine.:)

Heat generation in power cables is bad for at least two reasons:

1, Your case temp goes up, more heat to dispose off

2, The power supplied from the PSU isn't all going to the mobo, meaning your PSU may need to be more powerfull than necessary, or that the levels at the mobo are lower than optimal.

The losses should be low enough that the above are not an issue.

Further thought occurs. Gitster, do you know if the cables are warm because of stray heat from elsewhere, or are hot because they are generating it?

Definitely generating ther own heat, theres nothing near them which could heat them - big juno case, sides off, wires running though free space.

Simple..

Get a new PSU:) mine never felt warm.....

How's that going to prevent the wires getting warm?

Besides i don't actually have any problems, the PSU i'm using is an AMD and PIV approved 300W, and i'm hardly running any hardware in the machine.

I guess you should haven't worry about anything then...
