I think it is definitely a worthwhile feature if you do a lot of burning. Since a went to the Creative 12x10x32 CDRW with "burnproof protection" (buffer under-run protection) I have yet to burn a single "coaster". And that's out of at least 100 burns. Yep...the feature works.
I like, in order of preference:
Plextor
Pioneer
Lite-on
The CL CDRW I have is really a Lite-on which performs great. I would have gone Plextor, but my wallet said "no" to the extra $75 for the same speed.

I agree, burn proof is some definite "gotta have" technology at this point in time. There is no reason to get a drive without it.
I currently have a plextor, and while it is recommended by everyone and anyone... I hate it and will never buy plextor again. Not only does the drive not initialize properly on boot, but it won't even eject discs or even play them on some occasions. The plex manager software sucks too... it is incompatable with lots of os and does not even convert mp3-->wav to make an audio cd, it is compeltely uncustomizable, and somewhat unstable. I use nero 10 times out of 12.
I would recommend the TDK velo-cd recorder, I have installed it in a few machines for friends, and that thing alway works perfectly and quickly. It is a high quality piece. The tray slides smooth and steady and quickly... it spins up the drive quickly and just does whatever you tell it to right away, no problems. I also love the pioneer drives, however never had a cdr pioneer... I would assume they are of equally high quality.

I have to agree Burn-Proof or Just-Link(which does the same thing just a different implementation) are a necessity.
As for drives Plextor are supposed to be the best but you pay a premium. I have to agree with 4.6 about the TDK drives I absolutely love mine I have burned only one coaster in over 200 burns. One day I burned 50 CD's straight for a friend and did not get a single coaster. So my recommendation would be a TDK Velo-CD. But no matter what drive you get make sure it has some sort of buffer underrun protection.

Hmmm...thanks guys....I'm still not sure about burnproof....as despite all your recomendations I haven't made any coasters with my last 2 cdwriters......and I have burnt over 200 cd's in the last 2 months alone!!....still....the liteon 16Xburnproof writer is affordable at my local store....I think I will give it a go!!

i agree with Mike
Plextor is the top.Great service too (not that you'll need it ;) )
And i think you should not have waited for 200 burnt cd's to go for it  Since we got the Plextor 12x i have yet to see a burnt cd ;) ...

I think you may have got a bad Plextor!! (Rare) :( Mine works perfect and I yet to have any coasters, mine came with Nero 5 but I think this is poor compared to NTI CDMAKER 2000 PRO which I use.

I have seen the 24x Lite on drive, with burn proof, for as low as £69. I don't think you will find much cheaper, and certainly nothing as good, in that price area. :)

burnproofs a neat feature, but dont worry about it to much with modern systems IMO. If burn proof circuitry was available in writers a few years back it would have been worth its weight in gold, but nowadays maintaining a conitinous data stream is not a problem, caches are large and machines are quick!

i suppose you're right
but i'd say its ....less valuable if one a fast system. (yet you can still burn cds because not all errors are speed related)
also i must say u've made another really nice banner KMS ! :)

If your running xp make sure you get a burner that comes with good software Nero 5 is completely compatable with xp others are not and you'll have to pay a 20.00 xp upgrade.
