Esso aren't our friends... oh no...they're not very nice at all. But the really scary thing is that US's big man George, seems to be sitting right in their pocket :(

Esso are among the most important groups that paid for George Bush's election campaign, (ie big bucks).

As soon as George Bush became president, he said that the United States would pull out of international agreements to stop global warming (the Kyoto agreement)- exactly the policy that Esso was promoting.

Esso pretends that global warming isn't happening even though it's a major cause of it. Esso spends millions of dollars on misleading propaganda every year.

Esso has played a leading role in sabotaging international attempts to stop global warming. It would rather sell more petrol than protect future generations.

Esso refuses to invest in clean, green energy and instead spends all its money on dirty oil and gas. Even Shell and BP will invest $500 million each over the next three years in green energy projects.

Esso is the biggest oil company in the world - £12 billion in profits in 2000. If anyone can afford to help stop global warming it's Esso.

And this is one AMAZING fact: The amount of sunlight that falls on the earth each day could provide the world's energy for 27 years!

Now I'm no hippy, don't get me wrong, but jeeezus this make me angry...

Yeah but i reakon some practicle issues'll kinda get in the way of that!

Did you know that the energy required to purify and process the silicon required to make solor pannels is greater then that which they actually can generate in their life time.

So, bad example but otherwise yeah, ESSO are B4$T4rds.

Hmmm that sounds like Esso propaganda to me m8 ;)

But even if a fraction of the money spent on petrol research & oil locating so on, were to be spent on improving existing solar technology, everyone would be laughing...

but then the poor wouldn't be as poor, and the world can't have that, cos if the poor aren't as poor, the rich aren't as rich :(

I think that made sense, lol :)

In fact where did you get that info about the silicon, out of interest?

I want to look into that now :p

I was told it in a lecture about 2 years ago.

no idea whether is true or not, i just assumed it was seen as it was from a reliable source.

Cheers GITster, I did a huge web trawl trying to find confirmation of it and I couldn't...

What does ESSO stand for?
Enviromental ?? ?? Organization

Gibbon

Its a phonetic interpretation of S.O. (Standard Oil) as Esso as they didn't have the rights to S.O. or Standard Oil...

it's prolly something which isn't advertised ... hardly good press if its true.

True it may be, but i find it hard to believe if it was so....
but maybe it is so, maybe that is why the earth isnt covered in solar panels.........

hopefully someone can unravel one of earths greatest mysteries....

Not good press for who? The environmentalists don't have stocks & shares in solar power, they 'wanna save the earth man', its not like there gonna go round recommending something worse, lol :D

I reckon its more likely the evil petroleum companies spreading malicious lie's about alternative energy...:(

hmmm....good points being thrown around.......
they only thing i know about silicon is whats is on Britney Spear's chest....

GITster

well, it could be true, think about how much energy it require to form pure silicon, and in the amounts which a solar panel requires. to get even 12V at 1 amp you need about a 1ft square, hats a whole lot of slicon + the toxic chemicals produced in the process, most notibly arsnic (sp?).

perhaps rather then searching for solar panels you should search for silicon purification or somat.

besides there are more effecient ways of harnising the sun, you can set up a whole array of mirrors directing the light at one point - the heat it creates can then be used to super heat water and drive turbines like in power stations.

dont know how much propaganda about solar panels there is out there, but there are certain rules of physics that are valid (until proven wrong or modified)

When a "machine" is used to transform one type of energy to another, most of the energy is transformed into heat and thus lost. This ammounts to roughly 70-80%. (i know ---> )
This applies for all transformations.
This means that you get an average of 25% of the work you put in,after the transformation.
So solar panels cant give much (at least with current technology).
Of course petrol doesnt give much more, but its obviously cheaper to produce.

Do you know which machine of ALL machines gives the most work output?

The human body!

solar panels are only about 1% efficient.

GITster

I had a quick look round, and saw somewhere which said that fairly good quality solar panels were 14% efficent, and really top notch space craft stuff was 22% efficent.

lol, My original purpose for this thread wasn't to discuss the wonders of modern solar techonology (or the lack of it), it was to point out that multinationals such as ESSO are doing what they want, buying people off (even the US president  ) , and feeding YOU, the public a pack of lies, whilst systematically raping your planet.

Nice huh? :(

Although the solar panel thing is pretty interesting ;)

btw, apparently research has shown that, the pretty much the entire UK power requirements, can be harvested from wind farms, which would be placed on the scottish coasts.

Can you imagine how much cleaner & cheaper this would be! It would be a great example too.

If anyones interested I'll dig up a link.

i just read this whole thread and its actually really interesting if you havent been in the conversation lol. haha, you guys are like trying not to argue or be mean, but your like almost dissing the junk out of each other, politely putting them down lol. its pretty funny. :D
just thought id say that lol.

We're having an interesting & intelligent discourse, not dissing each other, lol :D

I have utmost respect for what GITSter says, so of course I wouldn't put him down any other way, than politely (j/k) ;)

I think its known in the trade, as friendly banter :)

There is a simple solution to this problem. All we need to do is use the same machine Doc Brown did in 'back to the future'. Simply put, we would use our garbage as fuel and energy.........
