I'm currently running 3 computers at home, the one I use personally doesn't allow me to download files i.e. drivers, patches, etc from most sites. I keep getting the broken image icon and can't download the file. Curiously enough I could go to the came site on my sons computer ( also running windows xp pro) and am able to download the file. This problem was apparent on my previous os windows 98se. So is consistent with the pc not necessarily with the os?
Any suggestions? I have looked through the tools section and internet options etc. but can't seem to find a solution.
I know it's probably something very obvious. But its starting to be a pain to have to go to another computer - download - and transfer files to this pc.

Well, my first solution would be to format/reinstall. But i wouldnt quite get that drastic yet. Now, for example, when you try to save a file and do 'right click', 'save as..', does it save it correctly then?

what type of network card are you using? some are quite finicky and have to be used just right.
if you have a spare try that one in the malfunctioning computer.
and also ensure that your network is set up properly.
and dont foreget to check IE security level.. am not sure but it could be your problem!

Don't have a network card installed.
Looked at security in IE - can't seem to find the obvious.

bohdan, when you said 'tried that didnt work', are you referring to trying the 'save as..' option, correct? Or were you referring to that you tried reformatting?
I am positive a reformat will fix it...but obvously lets not do that just yet. This is definitely a problem with your IE settings of some sort. Something got changed/corrupt. Lets try this. Go into 'add/remove programs' and select to remove Internet Explorer. This will then bring up an option to 'repair' IE. try to repair it, and then see if this fixes the problem....
Also, another test you can do is get Netscape and see if you can download with that. This will pin-point the problem primarily on IE.

Is it general NT permissions ? eg Log in as admin and try then. Not used XP but just thought I would throw my idea in to be shot down.

are the three of your computers wired in a home network?

Baptiser- I was referring to "save as" process when I said I tried it already.
My 3 computers are stand alone. Not Net linked yet.
I'm going to load opera later on this evening and see whether it is a browser issue or not.
I'll let you know
( p.s. thanks for the rapid responses and suggestions )

Installed Opera 5 and went to a download site. Looks good seems to want to allow me to download. So it was a browser problem after all. Only problem is that Opera doesn't seem to want to recognized my dial up settings. So I have to dial up first- either through an IE launch then close off IE and then launch opera.
Boy this little browser is sure fast though.
