Gibbon,
I see in you sig file you flashed your CD-RW to a faster rating. How did you do this and on what model?
Thanks!

Heh... its nice to be wanted, lol :)
Ok... as with cpu's some cdr are a higher rated spec than as they are sold due to certain market conditions, etc. They use firmware to let the OS know what they are, now some have a lower specced firmware than the drive itself, so these can be flashed with the firmware that meets the specs of the actiual drive hardware... confused yet? ;)
if you go to CDR-Info (http://www.cdrinfo.com/tips/hardware_oc.shtml) it will let you know which models can be upgraded, and give the necessary files.
They support various models of the following manufacturers AOPEN / HP / Iomega / LG / Lite-On / Plextor / Ricoh / Sony /TraxData
*** WARNING ***
It is very possible to completely and irretrievably break your CDR so make sure it'll support it, and that you do it properly!

If you need any help let me know... my model was an HP8250 (4x4x32) which is now flashed to a 9100 (8x4x32), nice huh? :D

Cool! :D According to the site, I can take my 9100 and tell it to be a 9300. Worth a try, anyway. Appreciate your help. Soon I will be faster. :) Is there any component that cannot be tweaked? I've only been on this board for 3 weeks or so and I've learned tons.
Thanks again!

We do our best Longshot, lol ;)
Seriously tho be careful... even my model, had to have a certain faceplate, and be recognized by the OS, with a specific code, otherwise it would have just beeen a standard model, and I would have ruined it... but if you are sure, then go for it!
Good luck m8, keep us posted :)

;) That's the best part of all this tweaking, saving and scrimping to buy some fancy new piece of gear and then forcing it to run faster than it's meant to and wreck it. Ha! I will keep your advice in mind and do the double checks before I do anything to the CD-RW, but it looks promising...

Well well well, sorry for the long absence, I have been buried in an overhaul of machinery at my evil job. Anyway, so far, "I've got a bad feeling about this..." It shows up in Winduhs as a 9300, and in the BIOS at boot up, but Easy CD can't find it, and I can't run diagnostics without it hanging. I will continue to trouble shoot, but I have already tried flashing it back to a 9100 with no success.... Uh oh  More in a bit... unless my PC catches fire! :)

:D Well that's good news, I'll try again. I did manage to successfully flash back to 9100, so I have a little more confidence now. Again, keep your fingers crossed...

Well after flashing back and fourth about a million times between 9100 and 9300, uninstalling and reinstalling the burning software about a dozen times, I have to admit defeat. :( I can't get it to recognize it as a CD-RW. It will work as a CD-ROM but will not admit it is a burner unless I leave it as a 9100. So, I'm back where I started, which isn't so bad, but it would have been cool to flash to a faster model. Oh well! ;)

Thanks!!! Let's hope it pays off in the "Under Construction" machine in pieces on my dining room table. :D Then there's the shady character on eBay holding back my new CD-ROM... But if that's the worst that ever happens to me, I'm doing alright. Thanks again for the karma, as proof that what goes around comes around, here's yours...
