Option 1 : spend more and get a kt266a chipset + ddr ram + athlon xp and keep it until the clawhammer is @ :D price

Option 2 : get the fastest thunderbird for my motherboard (by the way which one is it? and which one is the best overclocker) + more ram , and go for option number 1 later (will i need better cooling for this thunderbird ? )

I need to know quickly as a friend of mine is in the UK and will attend a computer fair (<--- maybe bad spelling there) this Friday or Sunday. So he may find some parts there at a good price.

thanks

If you really want to save money go for OPTION 3. Just get yourself a xp processor for that KT7a. It will overclock way better than a tbird 1.4, because the xp's have a larger core to transfer heat and there's only a 10.00 difference between a xp1600 and a 1.4tbird. When the Kr7's get cheaper then go 266a and ddr.

depending on what version your KT7A is, you could go for an XP chip now, which are comming down to the same prices as tbirds now.

otherwise youcould go for something like an abit KR7A and an XP chip and some DDR, but obviously it depends on how much cash you wanna spend.

if you got a ver 1.3 board at the mo, i would go for just an XP chip myself

guys version 1.0 mobo, so XP is out :(

i can spend for the new mobo+xp+ddr.....i have the $ ....point is....is it worth it? is it worth it NOW?

I cant have 3 pc's so if i am to upgrade the kt7a+Duron+128Mb RAM will go to replace the celeron rig. (so the celeron + mobo + ram will go out probable for sale).

And i'm going to use all the rest (cd-rom,hd,svga,soundcard etc) with the new mobo+cpu+ram aquisition

not sure what version 1.0 means (no support for .5 multipliers?)
If you have 3 computers I would wait for the price to drop on the Kr7a unless you want braggin rights then spend that cash.

dunno what the difference is between the different version, but apparently, only the v1.3 board have support for the XP :(

i would wait till after chrimbo and thn get a kr7A myself now!

Does that that mean cant run anything over 1200 or anything up to 12x mutiplier only? Can the bios be flashed?

should mean up to x12 multiplyer
unless the above 1200 thunderbirds have some difference
the bios helps only version 1.3 + of this mobo,to accomodate the XP

all tbirds over 1.0ghz have a mutiplier of 10x you only adjust your fsb to 133 or 140 to achieve 1400mhz and xp's use multipliers up to 12x. xp1600(10.5x133)xp1700(11x133)xp1800(11.5x133)xp19 00(12x133). Since you have full fsb control with the KT7 you should be good to go right?

i suppose i could get a thunderbird 1200 or even 1400 and run it ok,but not the XPs

dont know about the new (morgan core) Durons though....

...i must rephrase...

hehe, i cant have 3 of them.I will have 3 motherboards,3 cpus and memory for each

....but only enough hardware to run 2 systems and cant afford more,so ...i will eventually have to just move the duron+kt7a to the old system

check carefully therion.......I believe there is a high chance your mobo will let you run an XP........even if you don't get the best out of it till you go for a ddr board. Many users have tried, and only a few have failed......Abit ISN@T GARENTEEING IT....but they are not saying it wont work...............
12X133 gives 1596 mgz.......not bad going till you land yourself a kr7 (When they are old and grey....and cheap)

hmmm....then were is your xp in your kt7a amico mio eh? :D

i dont remember who it was that provided the link,i dont have it now, but from what i recall its not just a multiplier problem.

It is a different boot sequence problem ,so it wont boot at all, or it may boot sometimes and others not.But who wants a system that boots whenever it wants to,and not whenever you want to? :(

If anybody is reading this and has any link regarding tests of xp cpus on kt7a motherboards that are NOT v.1.3+ please respond...
