I recently built a SlotA athlon600 for my missus and kids!
the board i got had the cpu clips and one to support the heatsink underneath, the clip goes accross the northbridge chip!
i decided to overclock and got one of those golden orb tt heatsink and fan jobs and found it wouldn't fit if one of the orginal clips was still in place to i removed it, i also cracked open the athlon case and removed that aswell so i could chuck on a gfd!
everything works great but im worried the cpu might come lose out of its socket with all the weight thats on it! it's kinda loose......

I have a Classic 900 without a case with a big Globalwin VOS32 directly mounted on the core. I don't use the plastic clips that came with the motherboard. The only problem I have had was when I had the computer in my car taking it to a LAN party. What some people have done is remove the clips that are suppose to hold the Athlon, with case to the board, and use a zip tie or two through the holes of the motherboard to secure it to the board. You have to remove the motherboard to do this and be happy with your heatsink, because it will be a pain to remove the motherboard, the zip ties and then replace it all. Just my $0.02 since nobody else has replied yet. Hope this helps. :D
P.S. Welcome to the board. :xwavey:

thanx for the welcome :))
i intend to make good use of this slotA system i built!!!
it all started when we built an old skt7 that wouldn't network to my KT7 system!
then i was offered the athlon and board so i built the whole thing up and slapped in a geforce, tv-card, 384mb's pc133 ram, 20gig hard drive and cdrw
a bit overkill for the kids but it makes a great back up machine :))

Using the GFD you might have problems with the cable tie method. I do not have my slot A secured to the motherboard and am also running a big VOS32 cooler for over 1 1/2 years now.

Same here, I haven't secured mine either. The slot is normally tight enough to hold the processor, cooler and GFD without need for any more support. You should be OK unless you move your computer around a lot i.e LAN parties.

'Ace' who recently joined the slot A forum gave us this useful link to a company still selling slot A Athys. www.autdirect.co.uk
Give it a bash and see how you go. We'll be interested to know what their customer service etc is like.
