This is a photo of my KA7-100. As you can see it has fallen foul of the dodgy capacitors problem. :( So another one succumbs to the dark side and gets a socket system. I do still have one slot sytem running though and my 950 has replaced the 550 that used to be in that one. New system is based on an XP 1600  and an MSI 266A chipset mobo, with raid of course :)
Iwill change my sig to reflect the changes soon :(

I have seen the mobo with my own eyes and its looking sad for itself :(
But hey! His new system (and case you didn't mention Berks) is looking awsome! :D

Sorry to hear of your loss.
But as they say, "it's better to burn out, then to fade away!"
Good luck with your new system. It sounds like it will be sweet.

Hi Berks,
Welcome to the Socket Club.
It is sure nice to hit the big numbers on a socket.
Don't feel bad, I still have a Slot 750 around here someplace, and it is a nice reminder as to why I went to Socket.

4.6 I probably will RMA the board. I need to know how much handling charges etc Abit make to decide if it is worth while :)
And as Lolboy mentioned, it does all look very pretty in its shiny Lian Li aluminuim case. :) :)

Any pre-warning of melt down, Or visuals to inspect for. I would hate if my K7A took out any other components.

I had no warning Herdez. One minute I was browsing the net, next it tried to reboot but failed to get into windows, rebooted itself again about four times and failed. Turned it off, removed all clocking but still no go. After about 30 mins of trying things like clearing bios etc, it just refused to post. :(
To be fair though, I didn't inspect the board that often so it may have been leaking for a while.

just keep your eye on it,if its a brand new board it seems like it takes about 10 to 11 months to get that way

I think it depends on the date of manufacture... whether or not the caps will fail. There was a point where they started shipping with the better caps.... best would be to call and ask. My board also leaked for quite sometime before it failed. I suspect the way they die may be inconsistent though.

so is it the leaking 'fluids' that cause the failure?
or the 'emptying' of the cap, and it can't charge anymore?

:monty:
ehhh?? i dunno. I think empty caps... they get really hot when their empty too, and I they don't regulate the power flow the way their supposed to, core volts fluctuate and drop.

It would be good to know if it's just the capacitors that need replacing or whether other damage occurs when they die. If it is just the caps they are one of the few things on a mobo I reckon I'd be ok replacing myself !
cheers
Dave.

I recently bought an Athy that had come from a dead KA7 with cap problems and it was dead aswell. It may not be the only thing thats gets damaged when they go.

Hi Dave,
When Caps fail, they usually take something else down with them.
That is the nature of the beast.
