Firstly, if you are interested in a card...go for the 8500(retail)!! Truform is amazing!!(truform is being implemented in most new games...such as wolfienstien..simply amazing looking!!)

Swapping from my Creative Labs Annihilator 2 GF2 GTS to a VisionTek Ti500 did not make a night/day difference, at least not with todays games.
Sure, benchmarks went through the roof. But that is not what you are asking for.
One "real life" benefit, however, is the ability to turn on AA and all the good stuff and not take much of a performance hit. The frames ares till so high that even with AA X4 on, the picture is still smooth as butter.
If you are an avid gamer and quality of the experience is very important to you, then an upgrade may be in order. It would not necessarily be a practical upgrade, just one that enhances the experience (and makes you feel good to have that bleeding edge technology if only for a moment).
I hesitate to get into the Ti500 vs 8500 debate. Both are good cards. The only real difference is that the Ti 500 is a known quantity and the 8500 is not. I originally purchased the 8500 over a month ago and ended up taking it back when it could not complete 3DMark2001 without crashing. Sure, it turned out to be bad drivers, which are now supposedly fixed, but it left me wondering why ATI would release such a half baked porduct.
I would likely give the 8500 the nod as the card with better overall picture quality, but I will never be convinced that ATI can support it's products as well as NVidia. Right now ATI is promising to do better. NVidia on the other hand is providing that solid support right now, today, right out of the box.
Quite frankly, plunking down all that cash for bleeding edge video card should not be the gamble ATI has made it for the 8500. Again, I firmly beleive the 8500 drivers have been sorted out now, but, they should have been in the first place, and it begs the question if they can maintain quality support in the future.
I'm sure you would be happy with either card today. I just had a bad first impression experience with the 8500 i suppose.

thx for the info, i think i will be leaving that purchase...for now at least....hey bap....i looked into the 8500 but i am very skeptical as ATI scare me....the lack of decent driver support with the last gen cards is to blame....if anything i will be going for an nvidia card....but not just yet....thanks guys...u save my bank account...:)

Maybe its just me,
my Gladiac GTS even clocked at 220/360 struggles with Wolfenstein at 1024 with even half of the eye candy on. I have the latest offical Detonators and when I come across a water reflection or a nice lighting effect, it just crawls.
I have been looking at a Creative Geforce 3 Ti 200 which is cost effective and looks powerful enough. Most of the reviews I have read suggest that the ti200 can be easily clocked to the same speeds as the Standrd issue Geforce 3 but for two thirds the cost even here in Ireland.
The Radeon 8500 is still way too expensive.
What are people's experiences with Wolfenstein and the Geforce3?
Cheers,

Cheers Nitan,
I have to admit I have had trilinear filtering on, and come to think of it, I have had hassle with it in Max Payne too. What is the stroy, is the GTS implementation of trilinear filtering not up to scratch? I could force my old Voodoo3 to do it no problem.

i agree with mike nitan
not worth the $ right now to go from GTS to Ti500 or Radeon 8500/8800 ...really
with your system you can play all games @ 800x600 perfectly and @ 1024/768 almost perfectly.
why get something that makes difference only in higher resolutions ? who cares ? can you really tell the difference (and if yes is it SO big) between 800x600 - 1024x768 - 1200x1024 ?
nah...not the time.....if you had a GF2MX it might make a little more sense......but just a little ;)

Thanks Therion,
my other option was to get an Epxo 8KHA+ and 256Mb of PC2100 RAM for £166 Sterling. My AXIA K is still good for a few months so I will get an XP later.
Do any of you reckon a mainboard uipgrade would be better than the GF 3 Ti200 is £210 Steerling?
Still confused.

i think ull find the crashing was caused by fast writes, and yes the new drivers are very good but theres more coming within a week or so :)
