TuneUp Utilities 2008 (http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/) doesn't include a virus scanner
What's the problem?

Hmm... didn't think so. Friend of mine's lappie crashed, she says she had SEVERAL HUNDRED viruses (Where she saw this she didn't say), and she said her anti-virus was included. Didn't see any anti-virus software on the website, so it looks to me like she did not have any installed in the first place!
She followed whatever she could to do a recovery, and here I sit looking at a machine that I've checked back and forth for everything I can think of.
Seems she did a real good job of recovering the system (XP Pro), but there's not much else left! I was "voluntold" for the task- No Office, no anti-virus or anti-spyware, no wireless internet (Supposed to be built into it, some Gateway model), no Windows updates, no documents, nothing. Sqeaky clean. And I also have to figure out why the sound is missing, Media Player and Movie Maker don't want to open without it. She says she had sound before - Maybe a missing driver. Hope there's not a loose connection inside the case.
Wish me luck!

Ok first thing I would do is set up her wireless internet connection. As she has done a system restore it will have lost all her settings ie her WAP/WEP password. Next do a windows update. Hopefully this will sort out her driver problem as well as patch it up. If it doesnt sort out the driver try running http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html and it should identfy what sort of sound card shes running and we can work out the driver needed from that.Have you cot any conflicts in the Device Manager? For office you can use this (http://www.openoffice.org), antivirus this (http://free.grisoft.com) and for spyware this (http://superantispyware.com/). All free.

My, we do think alike! I had aready installed Open Office and AVG, and AdAware SE Personal, SpyBot and Windows Defender - Thanks for the linky on the other Anti-spyware proggie. As for the drivers, sure enough, the audio driver is old, but I still find no audio hardware to hook it up to. Still looking.
I started with a checkdisk scan (Good), installed AVG twice (First time didn't take), did Windows updates (94 updates on the first run! And even more on a couple more...), did most of my work in safe mode, defragged, did some work in msconfig, tweaked temp files, cache, restore, ran Belarc advisor, rebooted a trillion times, checked the machine on PC Pitstop (Neh, so-so system), all while I ran ALL the anti-virus and spyware scans as soon as I could install them, configure them, and update them. I've even been using old trusty proggies to get it good.
I installed her Tuneup Utilities 2008 with her registration key, checked out the program and decided that about half of the things it can do are things she probably isn't ready to handle at this time. So I only tweaked those things I know she would understand (I've got a lot of explaining to do).
One update I haven't done yet is XP Service Pack 3 until I'm sure this machine won't have any problems with it like other people have. More later.
So, this 'puter is now running like a champ (As far as what it can actually do), except for the fact that I haven't figured out the sound card prob yet. I fixed the wireless, she just has to connect to it herself when we get this machine back to her local network.
Maybe I should start charging for this stuff!:D:D:D:D:eek:

hehee!! Its the joy of actually fixing it thats the payment eh! :) Not to mention now your gonna get a repetation, "Oh my god! My machine was toast, 5 trillion viruses and it tried to take over my entire neighborhood, but he got it all fixed up and gave it back to me with a high gloss finish."
Well Done !
What did you do in msconfig? Like to hear more about that. :)

I used msconfig to stop all the extra start-up bloat proggies (Quicktime et. al.) in order to speed-up the boot process, and I also stopped a couple of unnecessary processes while I was in there (Could have done that in Task Manager, of course). Don't worry, I always check all the executables through sites like sysinfo.org.:borg:

I always use services.msc instead of msconfig.... Much safer....
