View Full Version : Goodbye IBM GXP

Just finally moved away from my old IBM 60GXPs ..........replacing them 3 shiny new Maxtor D740X 60 Giggers ........First impressions are good, the drives are ATA133, 7200rpm, and feel snappier than the IBMs (plus no more reliability worries)
You can read more on these new drives at www.storagereview.com ....where they are only beaten in benches by the new 8Mb cache WDs.

are they any louder than the ibms?
Fluke

They do sound a little louder.....not sure on speed as I have not run benches (I know Maxtor disks used to be bad for RAID setups, but that was before the Quantum merger)
Best of all, they are free to me as I get to eval all the new HW from work (just take back my old IBMs to re-use on customer machines) .....the cost we got them in at trade was £89!!!!

Hi,
Maxtor does make some noise, unlike Seagate Barracuba IV, which is a very quiet drive. IBM really need to improve its quality on their HDs, I have RMA many IBM HDs in the past. Maxtor is good without worry of RMA.
BTW, can you try these HDs on RAID see if they work fine?? Because I am looking into these HDs to replace my 2 X 60GB Seagate Cuba IV HDs on RAID 0. If you can, let us know:)
Here is a good review by Tom with new Maxtor HDs...

Talking of RMA's on IBM drives.
I just got my hands on an IBM 60GXP deskstar 41gig today, brand new for £50. They go for £92 on Dabs so I thought it was a good deal.
Do they also have problems? Should I keep my trusted Seagate?

Hi Lolboy,
The faliure rate of the GXP series is rumoured to be around 1.5%, the usual faliure rate is 0.5% so there is a problem but out of over 100 IBM GXP's I have had dealings with only 2 have had to go back ( ok so that 2% but who's counting :) ), and yeah £50 is a damn good deal !!

2% isn't anything to ya??
As a owner of system house. You wont wont your customers to come back to ya everyday...... We average selling 50 to 60 systems everyday....
2% probably is the statistic of brand new drive. What you the RMA rate within first year of purchase? Usually I am getting about 5% to 6% od return at first year.... That is pain the the bud..... I am using Seagates HDs now and they are very reliable. Speedy work as a single drive, very slient noise...almost none at idle.. That is why I sold I can sell the Seagate Barracuba IV 60GB 7200RPM HDs for $100 each....
The only bad thing is under RAID configuration...... The benchmark really sux....... But somehow I do felt they are faster.....
Interested at Intel P4 1.9 CPU?? Chek sell and Buy section...

lolboy,
Have got two of those 60GXP 40 gigs mirrored, after a bad experience with the 75 GXP 45 gig. I found the 60GXP to be quieter and much cooler than the 75GXP, and have not had any problems with them. Yet.
I don't suppose there's more 60GXPs around at that price? :)

i have heard no complaints for all the IBM owners i know
it was probably just this series of drives since IBM is know to have the best...

Don't know about the GXP60's but the 75's were a joke (and a bad one at that)
I had two and both have had to be sent back under warranty, so in my case it is a 100% failure rate. They were bought months apart so it is highly unlikely that they were from the same batch.

Add me to the list of broken 75GXP's. Last night it produced a nice little scratching noise, and the computer locked. A reboot would only provide for a broken stripe warning from the highpoint and then invalid system disk on windows. IBM :xripper:

Hi 4.6,
You can fix a broken stripe, just check out the highpoint controller section at Paul Howlands ABit KT7 Faq, the drive may well still be faulty but hopefully you can get the inaccessable data back before you rma the drive.

Tnx for the heads up Fluke:p

well. I've got two 75 GXP's mirrored RAID - and they are cool. Also a friend of mine bought the one from the same batch and its fine too...
Think you guys were just plain unlucky - these are good drives.

I have been using 75 and 60GXPs at work for around 2 years, and they are suddenly all falling over.
They seem to be failing at around two-three a week, out of a total install base of I guess around 1000. It seems to be effecting only machines that are powered up / down alot, must be a thermal / mechanical shock related problem.
So far IBM has cost us £6000 in data recovery. arghhhhhh.......
If anyone has a IBM drive that occasionaly seems to halt operation and make a "scratching" sound, backup your data ASAP, it seems this is the warning sign to total failiure. (even my own machine at work which had been doing this for some time finally died totally this week, and that was a pretty new 40.1Gb 60GXP)

I have alrdy replaced one GXP and the replacement has alrdy developed a bad cluster scandisk isolated the cluster, it has since developed a second cluster about 6 weeks later I suspected this. Im gonna rma the drive again and if they offer a exchange only Im selling it asap still sealed in the bag.
