View Full Version : Seasonal Attribution Project

Recent extreme weather events have prompted the debate about effects of human activity on the world's climate. Now you can help us to determine the extent to which extreme weather events like the United Kingdom floods of Autumn 2000 are attributable to human-induced climate change. We invite you to download and run high-resolution model simulations of the world's climate on your own computer. By comparing the results of these simulations, half of which will include the effects of human-induced climate change, and half of which will not, we will investigate the possible impact of human activity on extreme weather risk. Thank you for your help, and please join the project!
This project has been developed under the climateprediction.net project with support from WWF International. If you are already running one of climateprediction.net's experiments, or the new BBC Climate Change Experiment, then PLEASE allow your current experiment to finish before starting your Seasonal Attribution experiment. This project has fairly high computing requirements, including 1GB RAM: if your computer does not meet these, we suggest you try one of the main climateprediction.net experiments.

have you tried to creat an account in the attachment wizard? there's the option there where it says use existing account or create a new one.

No i havent. because you, well I should say I thought you need a project URL first....
Plus I havent tried it yet :)
Only because of this part
This project has fairly high computing requirements, including 1GB RAM:  I don't even come close

For all boinc projects, even when a create account link is not shown, the link is always:
<project website>/create_account_form.php
So the create account link for the seasonal attribution project is:
http://attribution.cpdn.org/create_account_form.php
EDIT:
And it can run on 512Mb of RAM, I've tried it. But it forces the usage of virtual memory and that slows the machine down *alot*. Not recommended if you use the machine on a daily basis.

It shouldnt only slow down the rest of the system but also criple the performance of the client itself if it has to read too much data from the HD, the CPU will probably not be fed enough data plus it will be busy accessing the HD which eats a few % too :)
So...pretty much a waste of time then (if you got less than a GB of RAM) :(

Just found this in there website
Please note: System Requirements
Please note that because this project uses a high-resolution climate model, it has fairly heavy CPU and Memory requirements:
CPU: Pentium 4, 2.4GHz (or equivalent, or higher!) is the minimum CPU suggested to complete a single simulation in under 4 weeks if run continuously. Slower processors will take longer.
RAM: 1GB of RAM is suggested, as the simulation takes up typically between 150-450MB of memory.
Disk space: 500MB of hard disk space should suffice.
Supported platforms: Windows XP/2000/NT and Linux.
If your computer does not meet these requirements then we suggest you try one of the main climateprediction.net projects (http://www.climateprediction.net/).

If anyone knows of anyone crunching this project, maybe you could ask them to fill us in on their system specs, does it use 150mb - 1GB of RAM, does it use less?

As above..
and from the 12th of April to today nobody has posted about it. From what I can tell, it uses a lot of RAM and isn't going to be around for long..
Maybe I am wrong
Also, does it meet the requirements?
NeoGen
23rd May 2006, 01:45 AM
They say on the system requirements that it uses between 150-450 Megs of RAM. I can see why they recommend a 1Gb machine for it... on peak times using 450 megs leaves a 512Mb machine crawling. (Unless you have a really light OS...definetly not windows)
I read here (http://attribution.cpdn.org/forum_thread.php?id=64) about their plans for the project.
We don't plan on closing the project for some months yet, and hopefully will keep it going for the majority of this year at least.
It's not specified, but seems like it'll run until nearly the end of the year?

OK, well it time to call for testing, if you know of anyone crunching this project get them to call into this forum and tell us about the project. I mean regularly popping in to keep us up to date on what happening..
Have you got a link to their forum?

There might be some forum section within the main climate prediction boards, but I only know of the normal project page message boards

Hi Rusty,
I crunched out 1 result (72 Credits) on 2.6 Ghz and 512M Ram in 4 hours or less. I'm not currently running Project right now so I can't help too much. It doesn't seem to run any different than BBC CCE and Boinc CPDN. Hope this helps some. I'll put it back on to see what happens.
Happy Crunching

It takes a good while to get it downloaded and not sure how long it takes to get it up. I haven't seen CDPN SAP, BBC CCE or Bonic CDPN Return the results so I don't know about upload.

The SAP project runs with a higher model resolution than other CPDN projects.
the initial download is around 50Mb (13Mb for subsequent models).
the model timesteps are 10 minutes (instead of 30).
there is a checkpoint every model day (takes 55 minutes on my Pentium D 2.8GHz Win2K system).
a very small trickle (earning 72 cobblestones) is returned every 5 model days.
the model runs for 360 model days - just under 2 weeks on my system.
the final upload is 5 result files totalling around 25Mb, taking 25 minutes on my shared 512k broadband connection.
The servers seem to be reliable.
Current project status: 489 completed results.
1,369 users
5,786 hosts (723 have returned a trickle in the past 24 hours)
total credits 5,141,147 cobblestones
total RAC 83,108 cobblestones

Must admit - servers are very reliable
To add to Thyme's info - they need 10.000 years of model time/results - and they got 489 as for now (done in 3months) :) So the project won't finish very quickly...

Just wanted to add my vote for this project.
Very stable, with the solid up-time of the other CPDN projects
Unit size is a more manageble than the other CPDN projects, although system requirements are a bit higher (as noted previously)
Includes CPDN's regular reporting of progress via trickles to award credits
Is a fullly public project in production mode -- not alpha or beta

OK, I hope the stats Thyme Lawn has provided are more what you need. From the operator level, running smoothly where SAP dominates one other BOINC project, and where it shares space with several others. It has reacted well to system crashes and extended shutdowns. I'm pretty sure those characteristics would apply to most BOINC projects. Anyhow, glad to report there have been no "downs" yet from this end.

I have been running SAP for a couple of days now. Steadily trickling results 4 times a day. It does consume 400MB of RAM, but doesn't interfere with my machine's real work
Specs: Pentium D 3.0 with 1GB RAM.
BTW: Account creation isn't done through the website, but through the Boinc client.

Everything is running ok. I'm running it 33% and it's doing 2 trickles a day. It is doing fine with the 512 RAM too.
Accounts can be created via web or manager with the boinc projects. It's probably better to Create/Attach them with the manager because it keep the same CPID. Tanpaku is the only one that can't be crated with 5.x manager but can be with 4.x.
Happy Crunching :-)

For a wu granted 95% of time on one 2.8 GHz core, the project sends a trickle-up message about every 2 hours. The final upload via DSL of a completed wu took about 14 minutes to upload 5 zip files totalling about 31 MB.
zip 1 = 15.3 MB (14 min:19 sec)
zip 2 = 10.8 MB (8:51)
zip 3 = 1.6 MB (1:40)
zip 4 = 1.8 MB (1:22)
zip 5 = 1.4 MB (1:34)
