AS stands for Autonomous System(s), here's (http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci213662,00.html) a nice explanation about it.

AS links, are simply links between different AS's.

A very simplistic view would be:
If you compare the internet mapping to a road map you can think of AS's and AS links as main intersections and main roads
