all i can say is wow! with this software, i just installed Windows 2000 inside of a folder of my XP machine. once i installed VM, i plunked in the Windows cd and installed it normally. since i only allocated 3 gigs for this folder, windows 2000 saw it as a drive, reformatted it, and installed normally. cool!
so now when i'm in VM,i can fire up w2k,and use another operating system while my normal OS runs.that means, i can install another DC project! is that excellent or what?
i think the scary part is, i can install more operating systems on my computer, but i think i'm limited with my ram, but for now, one will do.
wOOt!!
as a disclaimer, still early here, but i'll report all the good and bad as it happens.

Hi Mike,
I see it is a trial download.
Let us know how it runs for a week or so.
I am interested, but can't test it for a while.
That would make it a lot easier for me, and others, I am sure.
Take care...........

yah, its a trial for 30 days.
so here's a pic of the install of w2K:

see the tab at the top where it says "Virtual Machine 1"? i can probably add 2 more with the amount of Ram i have (512) and just switch between virtual machines there to see whats going on with my new computers.and i don't have to go through the 1 hour install of windows because there's a clone function. i just installed DNET on my "new" computer, and i'll see how it produces, while keeping an eye on my other version.
i have no idea what this software costs, but i'm going to check it out more seriously once i let this run for the next month. just awesome so far.

Its not cheap - I looked at is as an alternative a few years ago but went with win4lin due to cost factor (and only really needing to install windows under linux as opposed to any OS under any other). It had a few printing/networking issues back then - would very much like to know how it stacks up now, especially since W4L is now pretty ordinary..
(hmm - NVM uses VMW...my head hurts)

The point holding me back is actually that you'll still oly have one (in most cases) CPU having to execute all the different work, so its not as if you were miraculously getting more crunching power :)

Good for multiple instances of Dimes apparently.......cpu not an issue there

the DNET experiment was a failure. the new install caused my other one to just sit there, as if it were resting. so, tonight i will install Dimes on it. my original intent was to do this for Dimes, but i just had to try a cpu intensive project for the heck of it.
edit: oops, can't tonight. Bryan Adams concert after work.

If you're looking to try out a new OS (eg Linux) then you can get a free version that will do 1 VM from http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
The advantage of this is that it is free, the VMware workstation is a little pricey, but you can only run preset machines and only one at a time. Worth a look though :)
