View Full Version : Wondering about an alternative ranking ...

First of all, I think what you've done is great and wouldn't want you to change anything. I'm just wondering if in addition to the current rankings if you've ever considered computing a teams score based on the percentage of points their team has earned out of all points that have been earned? For example, suppose a team has t points in a particular project. And let's say the total points for all teams on that project is T, then you could do something like 10000*(t/T) to compute a score for the team in that project. Now add up the teams scores from all projects. Again, I'm just wondering if you've ever considered doing something like this in addition to what you're already doing.

Keep up the great work!

We were happy to come to a consensus on _one_ calculation formula after a very long thread (or more than one ;) ) so at the time we didnt consider that.

Implementing what you're suggesting is, I would humbly say so, a piece of cake for our Maser coder, its just a matter of finding the time to do the changes i'm afraid.

Keep the suggestions coming, it is only by walking that path that we can assure enhanced content and service to the community :)

Thanks for the friendly welcome! One thing I left out in the original post, although I guess it is fairly obvious, is that this alternate scoring would give points based on how much work a team has done on a project. If they've done half of the total work, then they'd get half of the points awarded for that project. Whereas the current scheme doesn't differentiate much between the 1st and 2nd place teams if there are a lot of teams on the project even if the 1st place team is a lot bigger.

On the otherhand, a small team that has done half the work on a small project would still earn as many points as a large team that has done half the work on a large project, so maybe this isn't what I was thinking it would be. It would probably just add incentive for large teams to switch to smaller projects in order more easily gain rank in the overall score.

Oh well, thanks for listening!

Giving points based on production is something that will, in the end, favor only the big teams as they simply steamroll everything and everyone.

The scoring system as it is now does favor smaller teams and projects. We knew it from the beginning and its what we've always wanted to get across as a message.

Some people behind the smaller projects have already experienced a noticeable increase in participating members since the DC Vault went online.

That fact is, for us, a very welcome side effect of what we're all accomplishing here together :)

And I like your choice of scoring. That's why I was suggesting this alternate would not replace that but be something separate.
