How efficient is a computer (running a DC project) used purely as a heat source? Discuss.....

you are on a roll this morning LB :D

Going into my computer room any hour of any day I am convinced they are nice little heating units - almost too nice. Wouldnt want to rely on it to do the whole house but :p

I have two dualies running in our bedroom - wonderful in winter but not so good in summer

poached or over easy? SetiClassic tends to burn eggs a bit more readily, you may want to cook with FAD.

Great Responses Guys, but there was a serious question here too ;)

How many watts are actually given off in heat relative to the energy used to do the calculations?

my guess, if the question is how many additional watts does a DC project produce,is somewhere in the 15-20 range.

I think you'll be surprised how much it actually is - my home server is running 24/7 and connected to an APC UPS unit with monitoring software that shows the current power drain. This is normally around 80W for the PC, Cable Modem and Wireless Router, then when the PC is running at 100% this is over 115W  so about 35W from idle to 100% and this is a P4-2.8C others I will be different.

I believe my old dual Palomino cored Athlon system is drawing perhaps 200 Watts, most of which is being dissipated as heat. It does make a noticeable difference to the room temperature if I leave it on over night especially in winter, maybe 2 or 3 degrees warmer.

Bear in mind my heating goes off over night.

Okay, reform question ;)

I want to replace electric 1KW heater with PC based heater. My question is how much computing power do I get for a given amount of heat?

I have 10 boxen in the garage. Gives it about a 20F increse from out side. Attached garage and insulated.

Maybe that will give you and idea. :)
