Since McAfee released new virus definitions on July 22 my DNET clients have beed disappearing. Wondering if I did have a problem I download the new client from the DNET website and McAfee immediately decided it was the Trojan Proxy-DistNet and deleted it... Is it me or McAfee which has a problem?

don't know that AV program very well but is there anywhere to exclude the files you don't want deleted? also, i have the same problem with one of my adware programs doing that.

Had the same problem with seventeen or bust, spy sweeper would delete it and say it was a trojan. So I would say it is McAfee's virus defenitions that are causing the problem. LOL so that means you and McAfee have a problem. :)

There have been several Dnet dropper trojans identified by McAfee in the past - looks like someone has been lazy with eliminating the latest version of the trojan and stuck the legitimate files in the virus definitions. This is the sort of sloppy work that caused my company to switch away from NAI/McAfee a couple of years ago.
Not too difficult to exclude specific files/folders, so long as you know which files are being removed!!

Hey kitkat rather than finding another project to do why not just get a better anti virus program. And while your at it why not go for a FREE antivirus program rather than the overinflated crap McAfee try to call an AV scanner. :D
I would recommend you pop along to www.grisoft.com and download the free version of AVG antivirus. :)
I used to be a big Norton AV fan (and before that a McAfee Fan) I have ditched both in favour of AVG in both my home and office environments.

AVG is undoubtedly the best FREE AV client Ozzer... but there ain't a single AV product better than NOD32 (http://www.nod32.com/products/nt.htm) IMO :sunshine:

Look under products then down the list to free edition and then follow the links. :)

Ozzer, yes my first thought was to dump McAfee and return to AV at home, so I can continue to press onwards and upwards on RC5-72.

I use EZ Trust. $20/year and it's never had a problem with my DC stuff, and I still think it's one of the best on the market.
It updates automatically each day (you can schedule it to do it when you want it to) unlike Grisoft's free one which only updates its definitions once a month
But it's personal choice of course :D

This should really be moved to General Software and drivers. Lots of good info. Been busy telling McAfee not to eat my DNET client - after a short conversation with the McAfee "help-less-desk". I have also write protected my .INI file and have a batch file to check the email address every day - just in case.
P.S. the odds of the the box presently in construction (P4-2.8G D) will have McAfee on it is 0% .. the first PSU only managed 20 mins before the smoke escaped.

We used NAI/McAfee at work until two years ago, when a series of botched updates (which randomly crashed our critical servers) and a dispute over a two year licence deal (two years right to use the product, but no entitlement to virus definitions in the second year...) caused us to switch.
Currently using CA eTrust (the corporate version of EZTrust) and have had no issues or problems at all. Technical support for rollout and deployments (e.g. when switching to XP SP2) has been very good.
We also use MessageLabs for e-mail/spam/porn screening.
They use a multi-engine screening approach based on their own heuristics engine and several commercial products.
This is an excellent service, but is beyond the budget of (most) home users. Interestingly, the only problems we have had with MessageLabs (a service interuption) was caused by problems with the NAI/McAfee engine...
