Hi Chaps,
This really does work:D
BROWSING SPEEDUP
... Suggested by Ricky Johnson (johnson.ricky@verizon.net).
This tip works on ALL Windows 95/98/ME and NT4/2000 systems with MS Internet Explorer 4/5/6 installed.
This Registry tip speeds up internet/remote (using Windows Explorer and/or Internet Explorer) browsing process considerably on most MS Windows 32-bit machines connected to a network and/or remote computer(s).
This actually fixes a BUG in MS Windows OSes that scan shared (remote) folders/files across the network for Scheduled Tasks, and can add a delay as long as 30 seconds (!), because it uses extra time to search the remote computer(s). :(
To do this, open Regedit (Win95/98/ME) or Regedt32 (WinNT4/2000) and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace
Highlight this value:
{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}
and delete it: right-click on it -> select Delete -> click OK.
ALSO:
The following patch increases Web page loading speed, by doubling the number of possible concurrent open connections. For example, imagine a web page has 20 images and some text - in order for your browser to get all these files, it opens 2 or 4 concurrent connections, depending on the Web server. Increasing the number of open connections allows for faster retrieving of the data. Please note that the patch sets some values outside of the HTML specs. If you decide to install it, backup your Registry first. Changes will take effect after you reboot. Download the patch appropriate for your OS

BigBen,
Just tried it and restarted...It really works! I doubted that it would work for me since I connect to a server in my basement which is the computer that is connected to the 'net; so I thought it only worked for the computer that's connected, but it works for any computer, whether connected through a network or not. Thanks! :)

Gotta try this one, my duallie at work running 2k appears very slow when browsing the network. Always wondered why. Itching to get down and dirty with regedit now. :D

Btw - does anyone know if this works w/XP or if there is an XP equivalent? Makes me wonder, because in general MSIE is still loads slower than Opera for web-browsing... which makes me think microsoft are slowing down my internet browsing for some reason... I just checked the XP update and there were 4 critical updates that were security-related, and I just checked it like a couple weeks ago. Doesn't instill a lot of confidence imo...

Hi,
You can still use the reg hack with XP.......by the way I always find Opera (I have tried the latest version ) slower than IE to load and especially in searching and accessing web pages

I can't find the value in the registry at all. All I have is this {2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D} data=Printers. Could it be that it was never there on mine?

Hi,
My version of XP has a second value, the one that has to be removed....I know it worked with 98,ME and my XP ...not sure if its the same for everyone though.

Oooo, thanks Berksie & everyone :)
I was one of the delighted peeps at Tekheads when Berksie posted this for our consumption, since then I reinstalled Windoze and I forgot about this tweak. I've just re-done it now. Thanks peeps! :)

Jema posted this tweak recently so I am making it a sticky
1. Type "about:config" in the adress field.
2. Set the value of network.http.pipelining to "true".
3. Set the value of network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to "100" or "200"
4. Set the value of network.http.proxy.pipelining to "true"
5. Set the value of nglayout.initialpaint.delay to "0"
The last line, "nglayout.initialpaint.delay", this entry needs to be created as it doesn't exist by default.
To create a new entry, right-click the other entries in the window, select "New" > "Integer", and paste in "nglayout.initialpaint.delay".
Set the value to zero -- "0".

I'm sure that one has already been posted on the forums somewhere
Or am I getting confused (highly likely :p) with another forum
Edited to amend bad spelling for the scratch smiley... but judging from Rag's reply... it would seem I'm not losing it :D

Since many have already 'jumped ship'... and many others are in the process of 'testing the water'... I reckon this Firefox Tweak Guide (http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_1.html) might prove useful... and may even encourage those in two minds about making the switch?
The guide is updated regularly - with the last update being just a few days ago (end Nov' '05)... so it's worth checking every so often (monthly) to see what new 'tweaks' have been discovered which might enhance your browsing experience.
Have fun

Anybody using IE7 might be able to make use of this IE7 Pro (http://www.ie7pro.com/) +/or IE 7 Tweak Utility (http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/2007/01/tweak-your-ie-7-settings.html)?
IE 7 Tweak Utility: Doesn't let you do very much tbh, but still...
"IE 7 Tweak Utility allows you change tweak settings within IE 7. Hide/Remove the search bar, command buttons, or the main menu."
IE7 Pro: Could prove a lot more useful, and it's constantly being updated/improved
"IE7 pro is an add-on for IE 7 which adds lots of features and extras, that makes your IE easier, more useful, secure and customizable.
Features:
IE7pro will help you Close/Open tab by double left click
switch proxy
set agent identification
block ads and flash
open new tab from address bar
apply super drag-drop
refresh tab automatically
recover session crash
manage tab history
view page information
save image files quickly"
Every little helps, right :thumb:
