When i first switch on my system and the hdd's start spinning I can hear a small clunking noise noise comeing from one of the raid drives, does this mean the drive is developing a fault? it only happens once when powered on. It still seems to worm ok but it annoys me as the drives are only a few weeks old and didn''t used to do it.

Hi Ummugumma.

Take Drive Fitness Test (version 2.30).Download the correct version for your Operational System, probably Windows version. There are two: Linux and Windows. This download creates a self booting diskette to run the DFT utility. This problem used to be a bad sector.Place the prepared floppy disk in the system to be tested and boot the system.Make sure to test both two Hds.If a failure is recorded, then a red screen appears. If the cause of failure is due to a media error (for example a bad sector) then you will be presented with a screen giving the opportunity to run Erase Disk option.
Note – Erase Disk use a Low Level format operation and will delete all the data on your disk, because that, make a backup of all your datas.Sometimes the screen shows a non-media test failure. In this case look for the "Failure Code" on red screen and follow the table described Here on page #28 ( DFT error codes) to take a decision about what to do.
I hope this help you.
Regards.

Thanks for the info ;)

The troublesome drive has just totally screwed for no reason at all. Can't partition it or anything, i'll run that test on the other hdd see what happens.

Don't think i'll ever be going near IBM hdd's again cos i've only had them a few weeks.

I've copied this thread to the NM BB faq - unfortunately, we're probably going to start seeing more and more problems with these 75GXP's from IBM... there is currently a class action lawsuit against IBM for this exact model of drive!

Its a real shame the probs folk are having with these drives. The strange thing is, untill that particular range, IBM had a superb reputation for reliability. I can see it taking years to recover the lost confidence in their products. :(

I never got round to sending the faulty IBM hdd back and i'm glad i didn't because i was going to yesterday and i thought before i do i'll give it another test in a different system at work and it turned out to be 100% error free. I partitioned, formatted, PC checked and run IBM fitness test on it.
Dunno what happened before, maybe it overheated and went a bit screwy for a while? I do have 4 hdd's in my rig stacked on top of each other, another 41gb IBM GXP60, Maxtor 30GB and a Fujitsu 1.7gb. I really should seperate them and bung a couple in the CD Rom bays.

I finally got all my data backed up and have some free time, so I'm gonna run this tonight. Wish me luck!

Well now I'm stumped! I ran both the quick and the advanced test, and only got 0x00 (no errors). So, my system instability must be coming from somewhere else... But I have no clue where! At this point I'm thinking of a windows reinstall... :(

Hi,

Actually I got 3 IBM HDs (75GPX medel)... Two of them making noise and dies on me. Becasue both have detected bad sector.... I have to use IBM fitness program to erase the HD and fix it. Now, all two works fine, but I am still hearing this damn noise from two..... I guess soon I have to drop them again for RMA...ARRR!!!

Seagate Barr IV HDs aren't doing well in benchmark test, but it should do felt is was running faster than benchmark. The best thing... I can tell you these HDs are so damn slience. You can only tell they are running by looking at HD LED!!!

i heard that noise too, then one day it stopped... so i opened up the drive to fing that the arm had detached its self... also to find scratches on the inside of the case.... lol i guess it wanted to die.
