Laptop Probs

A friend of mine has a laptop and it has been working fine, up until the other day. Now nothing is happening.
He said when he starts it up, he can hear it fire up and then nothing but a black screen, so he tried to plug in his desktop moniter etc, thinking it might be the screen but nothing happened when the mon etc from the DTop was plugged in.
What could be wrong? Could it be the HD?

Had something like this on one at work a few months ago and it was the hard drive that was broke - replaced under warranty and been running fine since then

OK, I have my hands on it now, I can here the HD spinning. Black Screen, tried plugging it into one at work, no go.

Installed a different HD, and still No go, tried booting from a cd, no go. I have tried everything I know.....Any ideas?

Seems video hardware related.... :(
