before the changeover, i would be logged out after 10 mins of inactivity.

In vB2, the option to be cookied was in your user control panel. You probably had it turned off then. It is moved in vB3, so that now if you do not uncheck the box (it is checked by default), you are cookied. You probably are timing out after 10 minutes, but you don't realize it because you don't have to log back in.
