Thanks for the welcome. It is ironic I join when Talon is stepping down, he is the reason I am here. Not to worry I can still razz him with just a phone call :D

I am not the most computer literate guy in town. Is there an idiot's guide to make Seti work faster anywhere on this site?

Of course I just checked my Seti and for some reason it was off, hrrmm, time to put the wife's undies in the freezer for revenge!

NJGuy, are you running the command line client? Is your screensaver set to blank the screen? If not, we can certainly help you get more crunch out of the box.

What are you crunching with, and what setup do you have for SETI on it?

:welcome: to Team Ninja, and let's get those :woot: rolling!

Welcome to the team, we are all pleased you joined. Changing to the CLI (command line client) its here (http://wcarchive.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.08.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe)

if you are using the GUI ("screensaver - which its not") client would certainly make SETI go faster. Would also suggest you download SETI driver and maybe SETI SPY have a look at the add-on section of the SETI site.

The CLI client Verision 3.03 can also be downloaded its meant to be a little faster than 3.08 but read the reason why it was changed here (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/version308.html)

3.03 is here (http://wcarchive.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe)

I downloaded the Seti Driver but it says I no command line found when I try to install. I just tried to do the command line with the link given and I try to give my set account info and it says account not found, so I try to open a new account and strangely enough it says account not found. Still scratching my head on this one. I blame my lack of success on modern education and heavy metal.:banghead:

Stupid question... You are connected to the net when tring to sign up/in yes?

Remember Seti account is your full email. "myname@domain.com"

Seti driver won't work untill you get the command client working.

Stick with we'll get it.

Oh, A few damaged brain cells is a small price to pay for ones perfered taste in music

Yes I am connected. I am using a cable modem attached to a P4 1.5 chip with 512 ram, to answer what I am crunching with. It is a rather generic set up for gaming, I am an ex-EQ addict who signs up for every Beta he can find and is currently enjoying th heck out of Will Rock (good FPS that I missed Beta for).

I did my full e-mail so that possible solution is shot. So the problem I am having is the command line client, once that falls into line I am sure the rest should be easy enough, that or I will just have my 13 month old Boxer install it for me. He is not just a dog, he is my tech support!

 hmmm

Just tried it on my account, seems to be working OK. You are choosing option 2 (returning user) right?

I was hoping maybe the server was down but it seems up.

Tell us exactally your steps and what you get.... Or lemme talk to the boxer..

NJGuy, please try this:

1. Create a folder called SETI on your hard drive

2. Place a copy of the SETI command line client in that folder

3. Place a copy of Seti Driver in that folder

4. Send a shortcut for the Seti Driver to the desktop

5. Run the Seti Driver program and set the maximum processes to one (1) since it's a single CPU box

6. Set desired Cache Size to 10 (enough for 2+ days without internet connectivity)

7. Check the boxes for Hide Processing and Auto Transmit

8. Click radio buttons for low Seti Client Priority and No Proxy/Socks Server

9. Check the boxes for Use SETI Driver, Use 24Hr Clock, and Create SETILog.csv, and then click the Save Config button

10. Close SETI Driver (x in upper right corner). Restart SETI Driver, and it will open a client window asking if it's a new account or existing account. Type in the number corresponding to existing account (2). Key in the account name in the format "xyz@qt.com" (use your own email address) and the client will start loading up some workunits (10 of them) and begin processing.

11. Minimize the SETI Driver, and it will run in the background all the time.

12. Put a copy of the SETI Driver shortcut in the Startup folder, too, so it will start anytime the system is rebooted.

This is my problem. I open the link, hit 2 for an existing account, type in my full e-mail address and it says,"No account at that e-mail address".

Well, that made my Boxer (named Jedi) scratch his head, wrinkle his brow and then pass gas. After my eyes stopped watering I took his advice and went to the Seti website and checked my account. Yes it is active and still there. At this point Jedi walked out of the room to chase a dust mote floating through the air and I am just sitting here scratching my head and opening the windows, hoping some one here has a clue to share with me.

NJGuy,

Check your caps lock key. Sounds like you are typing it in with capital letters and the system doesn't recognize it. :)

Good catch Hog, it is loaded and beginning analysis. When I get back from some errands I will work on the rest of the steps. Thanks for the aid guys!

Always happy to help. Remember to uninstall the GUI version of SETI@home from your computer, and set your screensaver to blank the screen after 10 minutes or so (saves a few CPU cycles not having to crunch the graphics). Every little bit helps!

Or if you are really quick while the SETI client is deleting temp files you can paste your user_info.sah file from your seti@home directory into directory 1. Find the seti@home directory under program files copy the user_info.sah, then start seti up and paste the user_info.sah into directory 1. You have a few seconds.

Believe I have it all in working order now. Will check in a few days if it looks like I am crunching faster. That or I will just speed it up with lube and have Jedi drool on to the motherboard.

NJGuy,

You will find that the version 3.03 command line client is measurably faster at crunching than the newer 3.08 version. The older version was compiled with code optimization, and the newer version was not. Both use the same algorithms for crunching, but the newer version is resistant to telecom redirection. Otherwise they are the same.

To avoid the potential for redirection of your w00ts when using 3.03, I recommend using a proxy server (SetiQueue) such as that run by David Whitney or Patrick Parker, both on our TEAM. Since you are in the USA, it might be most convenient for you to run with David Whitney's SetiQueue.

If you are interested in getting that last cycle squeezed from your machine, let me know and I'll send you detailed instructions on how to do it.

Welcome to the team NJGuy, it's about time you joined us! :D

Oh, and don't you worry about me, I'm still going to be around on the team, just lost the time to be a proper mod here. :D
