View Full Version : Further connection questions

Sorry for the noob questions chaps, just wanting to be clear on a few things.
Firstly, I've changed the keyserver port to 443..and http, but am getting connect errors to Hawkeyes :( ... however the client is then finding a distrib.net location, downloading and crunching happily (yippee!). Is there something I'm missing here
I'm assuming Hawkeyes stats are based on blocks returned via his server only? so would somebody suggest another stats site (if im unable to get blocks from his :( )
Finally, the work my client starting yesterday was random, which apparently is fine (thanks JD :) ) - but if it was unable to connect to the server at any time does it start further work and cache ALL completed work in the buff-out? or does it start again perhaps and overwrite one set of results previously stored?
cheers :sunshine:

Hi Squeaks,
As far as I know, Hawkeye's stats only reflect what has passed through his proxy. I know of no other stats site, apart from the Dnet one.
You could try sending through my proxy "meady.servebeer.com" first. Any results that go through mine then carry on to Hawkeye's, so they would appear in his stats.
The work cached already is not overwritten, as far as I know.

squeaky,
Make sure and don't put http:// before your address for proxy.
example:
proxy.hawkeye.com not http://proxy.hawkeye.com
If this doesn't work you can still uploa the units direct to RC5.

Also,
As far as I know the client will keep caching your completed units until you upload. I don't think there is a limit

Squeaks,
Forgive me for being an idiot. You caught me before my morning coffee.
The reason you can not connect to hawkeyes proxy is because the proxy is set for port 2067. Since your firewall will not allow 2067 you can not use this proxy.
1 see 3 options for you.
1 - Have hawkeye settup a second proxy on port 443
2 - Send your units direct to RC5 servers on port 443. You will only get stats updates once per day but it will work.
3 - 7 of 9 has a proxy setup on port 443. Its the one I use. If you wanted to use it you would get the stats updates like Hawkeyes proxy. If your interested in this let me know and I will get you the details.
One other note. I have 5 machines at work that I use for RC5. I try and make the client as unobtrusive as possible. I have them setup as services (on 98 and XP machines) and I have the client download and upload a whole days worth of units at 1 time. That way the client only connects once per day instead of 2-5 depending on machine speed. If you are interested in this option let me know and I can give you detailed instructions.
Thanx

Hi Squeaks :)
Have you tried configuring the client as shown in the piccy below, I run a Microsoft ISA firewall on a Windows 2000 Server at home for my internet access and this only allows outbound connections on port 8080, but by changing the setting as shown the client re-directs the traffic through port 8080 but it still arrives at Hawkeye's proxy on port 2064
Hope this helps

Thank you for all the help and suggestions Meady, JD and Terminator :)
I'll try the different variations tomorrow and see what progress can be made, cheers :)
And a quick note to JD re limiting downloading and uploads..not an issue right now, but if I am able to borg a couple of machines (and its unlikely in the current climate) I'd be very interested in knowing how to setup as you described
