Hey peeps.

I was tring to upload a sig from my PC and, first it took, at least in the pick list, but the image didn't come up. I then tried changing the file name, thinking that the "sig.png" tag had to be separated by an underscore. That one seemed liked it loaded but never made it to the pick list.

I didn't see any file size limits, I kinda went off the one I'm useing for the size.

Thanks for any help

The limit is 15Kb !

Not sure what you did wrong, but perhaps you did forget to click the "Submit" button again after choosing the picture from the list. :)

Aye!!

Why didn't I see that. Drat!!

That will be the reason, My sig is at a stately 388Kb

I guess I'll trim it up

Thanks Crystallize

388Kb

We have discussed loosening the limits as we have plenty of bandwidth to play with

But we have to take note of modem users and not make them second rate citizens :( That size of sig would be a real pain to them!

Some boards that will remain nameless have created massive blow ups with their users by imposing very strict sig guidelines  We are I think pretty free about what people can do, but we do think it is best to set an example with sane limits on the MarsJupiter sigs :)

Being a dial-up user (evenings & weekends) I wholeheartedly agree

hehe. Oh yea, no problem on the limit. I'm glad there's consideration for modem users. I didn't even pay attention to the file size until Crystallize pointed out the size limit.

I thought just the actual size (110X110) was the cause of modem lag, thats why I tried to keep it the same size as the exsisting ones. never realized there were other things that effected file size. hehe Thats why we got those bandwidth bandits here to here us small folk along.

As for the 388KB  ... heheh well you will soon learn one distinctive characteristic about me. I don't do anything small.

I have yet to figure out how Chelle is able to get the file size so small and still have such great looking sigs. Miraculous. Especially in a .png

Dithering and reducing the number of colours :p

CDS, Photoshop has a nice web optimization feature that lets you decrease the filesize while retaining the resolution... depending on the actual pixels of the image, of course... and how many colours and detail the image has. The larger the pixels the more resolution and dithering are compromised when trying to get it down to 15k. Usually anything under 300x100 can be optimized with retaining a decent resolution.

I'll have to have another try,... see if I can get decent results. I assume these options would be available in Photoshop 6,... (at work so I can't check right now...)

I remeber I had a bear of time trying to get a small .png that still looked o kay. I finally gave up and my the tiny little bar under my sig instead.

I use Photoshop7, but 6 shouldn't be much different. Go to: File - "Save for web". Use PNG-8 as the file type, and I normally use "Adaptive". Play around with decreasing the colours and dithering until you get it down to the desired size (watch the bottom left for filesize). Then you can toggle tabs on the top from Original/Optimized to compare how much quality you're losing. When you get it just right, hit Save and voila! :p
