The problem is so ridiculous it's almost funny (almost, but not quite)
Here's the status..
After a week of chasing our tails thinking the transfer was just taking a long time, we've tracked the problem back to the old registrar who is holding the domain in limbo right now. It never even made it through the registry, much less to Dotster (the new registrar, whom I've reamed more times than I care to think about right now).
When you make changes to any domain account, in this case a transfer and nameserver change, it emails the administrative contact on the domain for 'authorization' to make the change. The email has to be responded to in order to be authorized. They doddled too long and too much time had passed (us thinking all along the account was mid-transfer processing) and the old host account was cut off on the 31st. The nameservers are still pointed to the old server, which is basically into nothingness. In the meantime, we tried to at least re-point the nameservers (to the new server) from the old registrar, and in doing so it sends out the required authorization email, to an @ninjamicros account, which of course.. goes into the black hole.
The next logical course of action would be to change the administrative email address so that we can RESPOND (thus authorize) the nameserver changes.. but no.. to do that it requires email authorization from the owner contact.. also another @ninjamicros account.
Logic dictates a phonecall to the old registrar is in order, as this dilemma needs to be explained and the email contacts need to be changed manually by them in order for us to approve the required email authorizations. But no.. they are in Germany and do not offer telephone support
Next course of action? Re-activate our old host account (where the nameservers are still pointing) so we can at least put up re-directs through the domain name, and reclaim our lost-in-space emails so we can respond to the ones requiring authorization.
That's where we're at now. The old host account was in Mike's name and he was dealing with them in getting it set back up. As of last night he was waiting for a response, and hoping to get it done before he went out of town for the weekend.. which, it appears didn't happen before he had to leave.
So, at this point we're in limbo until Monday. As I said, it's a ridiculous situation but our hands really are tied. I'll post more as we make progress...

So the lesson is... don't use the same domain for admin e-mail as the domain it is admin-ing. :)
Chelle
8th February 2003, 12:38 AM
LOL, well the lesson is.. always use a reputable registrar, and preferably one who speaks English :p We kind of inherited the old one with the site when we took it over, and want to move it to a better one. So, the real lesson is... never attempt a registrar transfer a week before a DNS move (my bad)

Talon did some fancy footwork and we're on our way. Our nameservers are now pointing to F5, now we just need to propagate!

Ok, it looks like for the most part anyway that the propogation has mostly finished, except for maybe some parts of the world that are slower, or if your ISP is slow to update. Emails are starting to come in, but I am afraid that some emails sent to the ninjamicros.com accounts may have been lost. THIS IS THE LAST TIME WE ARE MOVING, so this will NOT happen again! :D Glad I could help out.

Just give it a wee bit more time Jema, (like you haven't already!) I just did the DNS change last night at around 9pm EST, so it hasn't even been 24 hours yet, and they always say to give it 24-72 hours to be 100% complete. For some, it happens almost instantly, for others, it happens at the tail end of the 72 hours. Unfortunately, there is nothihng I can do to speed it up, and if I could, I most definately would. :D

Mine's been intermittent here in Canada too, Jema. I had it from home for a bit last night, then it lost it again by this morning. Now here from work (30 minutes later) it came right up, lol.
Another 12 hours and most everyone should be okay.. except Meady, whom we'll see on Saturday

The URL works fine from here. But then again that's cause my DNS server somehow caught is last night just after you posted. When I get to work it will probably be dead there ....
Talon

Sorry Jema, didn't mean for that to sound like that. I know you weren't complaining mate. My post was more to let everyone who doesn't understand/know how propogation works what was going on and when to expect the change if it hasn't happened already. Cheers!

holy crap. A weeks worth of lost emails forever. I guess I should have paid for a service.. as this comes at the worst time.. I'm applying to masters programs and have not received several emails I expected. Can anyone recommend a good email service? I don't mind paying.. but it's just too risky using your ISP's accounts, since if you move... and they aren't in your new location, your screwed! I really need a permanent personal email. I'm thinking yahoo at this point... but it just seems too anonymous to be personal. Hmmm. Thanks for resolving this though guys... I know you guys work hard. ;)

4.6, the email problems we were having, are now over, and will not occur again. This last problem was due to us trying to rush the process, and it backfired on us. I can assure you, that this was the last time it will happen, and you can safely use your NM account.

OMG... i just reread that... I think that came off the wrong way. I'm by no means referring to ninjamicros ISP or moving this site... I was referring to everyone's own individual ISP provider. Like.. I have optimum online here, but I usually just rent apartments... and move around year to year... so basically, if I move off the optimum network, my email will not be accessible.. they will delete it!
the email you guys provide to us is great... and is totally generous of you. But I feel bad in that I do not want to put it on you that if you need to delete an account for space for an admin or a mod.. you have to be in a position to take it away from a member... you guys author the site & pioneer it... the accounts are really for your purposes only.
I think I can actually setup a mirror on the webspace I have... to point to any current email addy I am using... the only problem is, my webspace does not provide smtp support.. I tried finding servers around to send mail, but I remember running in circles and not getting anywhere with it.
Again... I thank you for the email, but it isn't right for a member (such as myself) to affect where or when the site makes moves... you guys do enough work around here... you don't need to support email services for anyone, thats a chore in itself! While still.. it came at a bad time for me, I don't want to seem ungrateful for something I probably have taken for granted...I thank ya instead! take care...

I'm glad you clarified that.
Yes to be honest when I read it I was like .... WTF! He's complaining about them being his personal E-Mail people now and that they are no good.
I'm sure alot of people probably thought the same thing.
I was hoping that nobody would answer unkindly and was happy to see you posted again and clarified.

Have no fear 4.6, I didn't take it that way at all. The reason for my post was to reassure you that your email account will now work without problems (barring the unforeseen server issue, which ever ISP has), so you don't have to rush out and get another email address. Of course if you want to, you can, that's up to you.
Talon. :D
(PS:Not speaking for the owners on this issue, just commenting on why the server was having problems, and that it is corrected now)

Yup that sums it up  and with Talon's help we're all functional again.. okay, well the site is functional :p
