Taken from SWGalaxies.net (http://www.swgalaxies.net/), a fan site:

First off, Star Wars: Galaxies is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), which basically means there are thousands of people in one world at all times of the day, pretending to be characters from that world. Star Wars Galaxies is being developed by Sony/Verant and published by LucasArts. Other MMORPGs, such as EverQuest and Asheron's Call, have been brilliantly successful in the past, and Verant is hoping to hit the nail on the head with a combination of Online play and the infamous Star Wars Universe.

With thousands of players in the world at any one time, telling each other apart can be challenging. Eight different playable species and hundreds of clothing options make for some of the most diverse imagery ever. Attention to detail is incredible, as seen in some of the early screenshots released by the Official Site

Greetings, Exalted One. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Squeakywalker, Jedi Knight and friend to Captain Elfy. I know that you are powerful, mighty Jema, and that your anger with Elfy must be equally powerful. I seek an audience with Your Greatness to bargain for Elfy's online time. With your wisdom, I'm sure that we can work out an arrangement which will be mutually beneficial and enable us to avoid any unpleasant confrontation. As a token of my goodwill, I present to you a gift: these two geeks (Gservo and Talon ;) ).

Brace yourself. In today’s double FAQ (http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/features/faq.jsp)
you are going to get more information about Jedi than we have revealed in over a year. This information is not for the faint of heart because it gives some concrete details on why Jedi will likely be rare in our game. Our two main goals when it came to putting Jedi in the game was to maintain the spirit of the continuity of the time period and to offer a fun and challenging role for those who sought it. These tenets are in conflict with each other. Our solution was to devise a system that would allow any player the opportunity to work towards this particular goal but at the same time make it challenging enough that only those who are serious about playing the character type would succeed. Jedi are potentially more powerful than other character types and with that extra power comes extra risk.

There is still a bunch of stuff we are not telling you about Jedi and force sensitivity because we want to keep an air of mystery around them. However, we felt the following information was imperative for you to know before you decide to pursue this challenging path.

I present to you two of the most frequently asked questions about Star Wars Galaxies:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6.17 How do Jedi work?
Your main character does not become a Jedi. Rather, the actions of your main character can unlock an additional character slot which is Force-sensitive. Characters created in this additional slot can then advance through the Jedi skills as well as any of the other skills in the game. Each player account allows for only one potential Jedi slot and the mysterious method to unlock it won't be the same for every player.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6.18 How are you going to keep Jedi rare?
Jedi characters suffer permadeath unless they reach Jedi Master status. You do not lose the Jedi character slot, but the character in that slot is deleted. Upon reaching Jedi Master status, Jedi become "blue glowies" rather than permadying when they die. In order to compensate for deaths that are completely out of control of the player (such as ones caused by network latency) each Jedi will be able to die a couple times before death is permanent. The life of a Jedi is extraordinarily difficult, and successfully making it all the way to Jedi Master should be considered the most difficult challenge in the game.

LucasArts will delay the inclusion of player-owned cities, vehicles, and Dark Jedi to some time after the April launch of the Star Wars online role-playing game.

LucasArts and Sony Online have revealed that some key features have been postponed from the initial feature list for Star Wars Galaxies. The list includes player-owned cities, drivable vehicles, player-generated missions, and the Dark Jedi character class.
In a lengthy
post (http://boards.station.sony.com/ubb/starwars/Forum3/HTML/100801.html) on the official Star Wars Galaxies forums, LucasArts producer Haden Blackman offers detailed reasons for why each feature will be delayed, noting that in the Live Team schedule there's "a plan for implementing the postponed systems within the first seven or eight months after launch." Blackman also suggests that many of the delayed features are not immediately critical because it will take some time for players to attain the necessary levels in order to use them.

The postponement of certain features will have effects that reach into other areas of the game. For example, the lack of player-controlled cities at the outset means that the development team is also delaying the politician profession. However, the ability for players to build and own houses will remain a launch feature. The lack of drivable vehicles means that the ability to mount creatures for transportation is also delayed. To compensate, the team is allowing for more access to public transports so players can traverse large areas.

A handful of interesting Galaxies Post on the Official Forums.
Kevin O'Hara on Beta 3 and Planets
We’ll have all nine planets ready for test in Beta 3, but we are not going to open them all up for the beta testers. We want to keep some content back for release. Planets that Beta testers don’t get to see will get full testing from our internal testing departments.
I’m not sure at this time how many planets we are holding back, but Beta testers will definitely travel to more than 3 planets.

No delay, we always had it planned this way.

Haden Blackman on Shug's Expedition #8
After I recover, I continue exploring the jungle. I spot a number of gnort, chuba, and nuna populations before emerging from the bamboo. I find myself in a small valley, flanked by steep hills on either side. Running about the valley are creatures that look like a cross between a pit bull and a rhino. These I identify as motts. The creatures are silhouetted against a huge Naboo moon, hanging low in the sky (yes, I've wandered all day, Naboo time at least - about four hours).
TKarrde, Station Member, on Player Cities
We have been taking a very aggressive stance to combat inactivity among our membership. We have had 5 roll calls already since Nabubu was founded in March 2001, and have removed 244 citizens from our roster due to lack of responses, bad e-mails or other issues. Our recruitment process is also pretty rigorous which allows us to select only the most committed and enthusiastic applicants into the city.

Galaxies FAQ Updated (http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/features/faq.jsp)

The Galaxies FAQ has been updated as usual every Friday.
1.19 Will the game be difficult to play?
It is our intention to make the game as new player friendly as possible. To this end we are continually focus testing with “non-gamer” people to see where they are having problems. Additionally when creating a character, you will start out in a tutorial on a space station that carefully explains all the important controls and interface options without interference from other players. The tutorial is meant to be a fun and fiction rich experience that players can go through at their own pace. Although it is recommended, advanced players can skip right to the end of the tutorial where you pick your starting city/planet.

Once you are on a planet, you will receive game mail to help direct your early experiences. Some game elements that were not gone over in the tutorial will give you additional information the first time you encounter them in game. All of the interface elements also have tooltips that pop up if you hold the mouse over it for a short time. Finally the game will come with a thick manual and a quick start guide. If all that fails, there will likely be many players in the game who clearly mark themselves as “Newbie Helpers”. A quick search for them will likely get all of your questions answered.
