I had a major crash Wednesday night.....
Wouldn't reboot...not in last working mode...not in safe mode....nothing :xpout:

So I reinstalled windows in a new folder...kept the old folder...

Now I have files I can't access....I seem to be unable to reinstall my FTP program and Photoshop doesn't like me either.... giving me an error that says..

"could not complete your request because of missing or invalid personalization information"

upon trying to open it.

Add to that probs with IE....locks up/ stops responding .....can only use Mozilla now..

:explode:

Any and all suggestions are welcome...including dropping it from the second story deck

TIA

XP I take it?
could be a permissions prob...the files are looking to your old windows to see who has access
if so reset your permissions for those files/folders to allow "everyone" to have full control....worked for me with a bit of playing around

Thanks wylie :) I'll try that tonight and see what happens.

I could be on the wrong track here - but in the files you cant access, what do you see in the permissions bit? is there a string of numbers listed as having some access rights? if so delete that "user" and add yourself.

OK, I can right click on the file and go to properties but there is no security tab... it does tell me to drag it to the shared documents folder to make it accessable to all, but that isn't allowed either.

ok..to get rid of the simple file sharing which is hiding the security options..

Click Start | My Computer | Tools | Folder Options | View.
Scroll to the bottom of the list of advanced settings and un-check Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended).
Click OK.

have not got time right now to go through the file permissions or access control but here is a lovely linkie with some instructions to help.

I assume your account is setup as administrator. If so give Administrator Full control, and then also have the administrator account take ownership of the folders as well. Don't think it will work, but give it a shot.

I've done that too....

The folders I can't access are tied to the older install of WinXPpro..does this make a difference? I can access anything and everything else, there are just a few folder that I can not.

Which folders exactly?

Jules

In my documents and settings....

When I right click on a folder I have 3 tabs...General, Sharing and Customize. When I go to the Sharing tab...it tells me "To share this folder with other users of this computer only, drag it to the Shared Documents folder." Although when I try to do this I get an error that reads...."Cannot create or replace Julia: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use"

Thanks again for your help.

Probably to late now but you didnt happen to uninstall a virus program did you? I had made the mistake of tring to uninstall norton once...only once. Same problems with McAfee as well. Once I re-installed them (by making cd first active and some dos magic dust) It rebooted again all systems GO.

Hi Nick :) No I'd not uninstalled anything at all.

Wish that'd been the answer.

Thank you.
