Ok, after only recently building a new AMD XP for the first time, and having been out of the loop in the processor game for some time now, I am relative :newbie: again, so bare with me on this...

I have an AMD XP1800 that I got a few months ago. Is this a T-bred?

Probably not. it most likely is a Palomino still.

I'll try to dig up how you can identify whether its a Pally or Tbred.

edit: educated guess: if default voltage is 1.75, its a pally, if the default voltage is 1.65, its a tbred (set default or auto in bios and see what its set to)

Ok, I believe it is a Pally then, because if I remember correctly, the default was 1.75. How are these for overclocking, do they hold up ok? I am going to connect the bridges this weekend if I have the time so I can start playing with it abit.

I have been able to push some of my XP1700s pretty far. I had one running at XP2100 speeds for some time. But FSB card stability always plays its toll. Adequate cooling is a must. Have you a CPU cooler yet?

And what Board will it be in?

My Pally 1800+ (1533) goes to 1740 Mhz at 1.95V which is 2100 speed yeah

The mobo is an Epox 8KHA+. THE CPU cooler is a standard ANTEC CPU cooler rated to the XP 2100 I believe, and the case has an 80mm intake in the front, an 80mm intake over the Hard Drive bay, and two 80mm exhausts, all Antec fans. The exhausts are a higher rated CFM than the intakes to help move the heat out, but that is all I have done so far. Any suggestions on the type of CPU cooler I should get? (preferably one that does not sound like a 747)

Is that all FSB overclocking, or did you also change the multiplier?

The only "high end" coolers I have used thus far are the Zalman,.. and the Volcanoe 9.

The Volcanoe being much easier to implement and live with,.. plus it is variable speed so you can adjust your noise Vs. cooling to your specific needs. And its half the price of the Zalman.

Ok, thanks for the tips on that, I will take a look at ordering one.

best cooler i know of at the mo is the thermaltake SLK-800 (i think thats what its called, big coper job that will accept 60, 70 and 80mm fans)

my XP1800 is going 1760 with a 185 multiplier at the mo, voltage is only 1.8 vcore, if you know what code your core is (like the old AXIA tbirds) go have a look on overclockers.com and see what other people have got

Its unlocked. 1740 Mhz is the highest stable setting i've found.

CDS- Found the Volcano 9 here (http://2cooltek.safeshopper.com/35/390.htm?512) with the cool tri-color fan! Gonna order that one!

Rags- Thanks for the info. I found an unlocking kit at High Speed PC (http://www.highspeedpc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HSPC&Product_Code=XPkit&Category_Code=OC) and I will most likely order that so I can get the job done right. What did you use to unlock it?

I used this one: High Speed PC (http://www.highspeedpc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HSPC&Product_Code=XPkit&Category_Code=OC)

:D :D

Doesnt the Volcano use some noisy (747) 8000 rpm fan?

I'm using a Zalman and the review of it is right here on NM :D :D

LOL, well at least I know I am on the right track then! Hey, in your review you mentioned the Epox Hardware Monitoring Tool. Is this the one in the BIOS, or is there a software application for windows as well?

the difference between a pally and t/b core is the shape, pally's are square, t/b are oblong;) pic of a t/b

Oh and to make it even easier, the TBreds all have the Black sticker with the info printed on them vs info on the core itself for Pallys ;)

@Talon in the BIOS as well as a Windows application.

Cool, thanks everyone. It's definately a Pally then.

Rags, where can I get that proggy, the Epox site doesn't seem to have it. Thanks in advance!

Hey Talon; let us know how it goes with the unlocking. I am thinking of redoing my H20 kit and would unlock my core at that time. (I have an XP 1800+ Pally.) That unlocking kit looks like the stuff, thanks for the link. :)
