Remind me, on a previously working system, sudden death has occurred. It powers on the fans and drives spin up. but no beeps and no display :( what is most probable cause?

Hmmm,. I usually say Power supply,.. although it is odd when part powers up and the rest does not.

If a memory stick is unseated,.. those are the exact symptoms you will get as well. I have a particualr Mobo that is very finicky about how the memory is seated,..

Then of course try all the cards as well,.. particualarly graphics card. Unplug and replug them all with care.

.... if that has no effect,...

Then I'd try an alternate PSU. These seem to die like May Flies these last few years. Not sure if they are getting worse or if the higher wattages required shorten the lifespan? But I go through PSUs like no other part.

Good luck.

I hate to sound like a broken record with my answers, but every time I have seen this happen it has been the mother board itself. Of course, it could still be the PSU, but I am willing to be it's the mobo.

In this case it seems to be a blown video card, a gainward geforce4200. removing it got my beeps back, and replacing it with a geforce2 got my pc back, albeit with a good deal of callisto work since fridays backup fried

thanks for the ideas

Well, glad it was that simple. Usually when a vid card goes, you at least get a beeping error of some kind, but I guess not always!!

...! Yeah but these days a Vid card costs more than a Mobo! Still easier to deal with though.

Funny how we don't mind paying high prices for video cards,
yet we think twice before doing the same with a mobo :p
Even memory costs more in most cases.

Untill you posted about here, i had never realy thought about it.

Video Cards are ridiculously priced! It's a case of "want" over need. All you get for your high priced Video cards are games. A really decent 2D graphics card will run Windows as wel as,.. if not better than A G-force TI-4600 or ATI 9700. In the case of the old war horse Matrox Cards,.. like an old 16 MB G-400,.. They are measurably better in Photoshop and visibly better too,...
