View Full Version : Java Chatroom

After gauging the interest/traffic on the php chatroom over the last two weeks, we decided that it’s a feature definitely worth keeping… but, that particular script was a little browser-fussy, not to mention slow on the uptake. As it’s REALLY hard to find a chat script that will support every browser and ISP, and one that doesn’t put a big strain on a server as so many do.. it just takes some experimenting.
We’ve come up with a new one that I think everyone will enjoy. It’s java, VERY fast and user-friendly. Your browser must support java in order for it to work, and I’ve included a link to download if you don’t currently have it.
A few notes:
- The chatroom is integrated with the forums, which means you must be registered and logged-in in order to access the chatroom.
- Be sure to read the help file once you’re in there, there’s some really cool features like private messaging and other chat commands.
- Right-clicking anywhere on the chat area will bring up a menu for options like text size and colours.
- Right-clicking in the message input box will bring up a menu of smilies and audio emoticons for your chatting enjoyment :D
- We will now take requests for additional rooms to add, so please add your requests with any comments/problems/suggestions to this thread.
Thanks to FWC for his code for the integration hack.. and for a few custom audio emoticons :)
Enjoy! :sunshine:

It's linked from the homepage, and forum buttons on the Neo Ninja style. I'll be adding a button to the rest of the style sets during the week.

Firstly you have to be quite patient as it takes a while to load the jave applet. Another thing is that if you are behind a firewall you need to make sure that you can access client.sigmachat.com on ports 8000 through 8009.

Still no luck here.
Using Win XP Home and IE 6.0 and firewall
Keep getting this Java error:
java.lang.NullPointerException
at clientGUI.writeObject(Unknown Source)
at clientGUI.loginHandler(Unknown Source)
at clientGUI.start(Unknown Source)
at Client.start(Unknown Source)
at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
uninstalled and reinstalled Java and double checked firewall and the needed ports should be open.
Any ideas

They were the errors I got when the firewall was stopping access. What firewall are you using ?

Oh, and are you using ZoneAlarm ?

Ok it was a firewall issue.
I use Kerio Firewall and had to add the requested ports to my IE allow rule

for those among us not using neoninja,.. and well,.. downloading Sun's Java has fixed a problem I've had fro months. The Java website said I had Java and didn't need to download it,..
But I downloaded and installed,.. what turned out to be a newer,.. (and NON-MS ruined! ) version of Java and not only can I go in the chatroom but the old problem is gone! :D
So Chelle fixed my PC :)

Top of the screen there is a thing that says "Links" or "URL's" or something like that. When a URL is pasted into the chat then you can click there and find them all in one location. I don't like it that way myself, but it is there though.

This is driving me nuts
I've opened TCP ports 8000-8009 on my home Firewall and still all I get is a grey rectangle. No error messages. Nothing.
I don't know if it is a Java problem, an IE problem or a Firewall problem.
Are all ports in the range required, or is only one used?
Is the incoming and outgoing port number the same, or do I need to set up a trigger rule?
Should I enable UDP rather than TCP?
Who do I have to sleep with to gain access?

Do you guys have the Sun java plugin installed? (link posted on the entrance page)
Just looking around on the program's support page. Not sure if this will help anyone or not, but:
If you are having difficulties getting online one of our RaiderCSS clients, this check-list may help you determine exactly what the problem is, and how to resolve it. The majority of our users have no trouble at all connecting.
First, ensure that our servers are online. We are constantly upgrading our services to provide you with additional features, and powerful software. You can check our server status and recent news by logging in at http://css.raidersoft.com. You may be required to empty your web browser's cache, and reload your web browser to get online.
Secondly, ensure that your computer is capable of running our software. Chances are most likely that your computer can run our chat software. Often times; however; users may disable a specific feature on their web browser that may cause problems. Ensure the following features are enabled on your computer's web browser:
Java™
If you are running a newer version of a Microsoft Operating System (such as Windows XP) and all that you see is a broken link, you will need to download a copy of the Java™ Virtual Machine in order to run our application. You may download Java™ Support for your browser from one of the following links below:
Microsoft Virtual Machine (for MSIE)
Sun Java™ Plugin (for Netscape, MSIE, Opera, etc..)
Difficulties have been reported using some non-english language/keyboard settings. Additionally, certain browsers running on Macintosh platforms are not capable of running our software due to problems outside of our control. As WebTV does not support Java™, WebTV users will not be able to access our chat rooms.
Users behind firewalls may need to inform their local IT/network administrator to allow TCP connections on port 45027 at css.raidersoft.com.
AOL Members: Some users have reported that the built-in AOL browser has difficulty connecting to our service, or does not load colors/emoticons properly. To resolve this, minimize your AOL connection, and use the Internet Explorer browser that came with your computer to access our chat rooms.

Well Chelle I installed the Java patch a few days ago - however IE just locked up on me so I removed it & went back to SQ1, today I`ve managed to get in without any grief ( although nobody there atm )
FYI I`m running W98 & IE6 SP1 with Java VM 5.0.3809.0

I just finally tried this not a big chat room person myself. It loaded up fine however will this being a Java app mess with some of the DC projects that use Java? At least I think sengent and TSC use Java.

You should be alright if it loaded. If you integrated the alternate version of Java into your browser when you installed it then it is using that version, if not then it was using the MS version. Either way it will not have overridden your Jave version for DC projects.
