I just recently defragmented the drive, and still scored a 12,000 in sandra. An ATA66 7200RPM hard drive scores 17,000 and an ATA100 7200RPM drive scores 24,000. Im doing half as good as i should be.

I just used HDtach, how are these scores?:

Anyone know what the problem is?

I also have a Maxtor drive set as a slave under the IBM, it scores perfectly - 26,000.

What O/S are you using? Maybe DMA is not enabled for the drive!

I'm running windows XP, and 'DMA if availible" is selected for both hard drives.

The read speed is fine, but that random access time is way too high... it should be at least half that. I would expect ~9ms random seek time. Try checking to make sure you have an 80 pin cable... it should have really thin wires. Go over master/slave connections & jumper settings too.

Im definitly on a good cable because the maxtor drive on that same cable ( slave ) scored fine. Master/Slave connections are fine :(

ok, just to clarify: Is the Maxtor an ATA66 and the IBM ATA 100? The reason I ask is because if they are sharing the same IDE cable, the IBM will only run at ATA66. Drives sharing the same IDE cable can only go as fast as the slowest drive on the chain. If this is not the case, however, you can disregard this entire comment! :D

Well, I just formatted and now the IBM scores better than the Maxtor :)
